Oil question

New guy to the site. Love it..Anyhow here is my question ( and not wanting start a big fight) I have read all the post about oil, and alot of the members are using the Rotella oil, I went to the local Wal-mart they had the 15-40 Rotella, not syn. and that was all. It looks like it is used for Diesel engines, Not being a gear head,(lucky to change my own oil) will this work in a 2007 GL1800. Most of the post talk about the syn., they had the Mobil 1 syn. I work for a John Deere dealership, and they have John Deere 15-40 +50 that they used for all the John Deere equipment. So there is my question: will oil made for Diesel motors work in a GL1800? Like someone said when you buy a $20000.00 Goldwing what's another $20.00 for good oil. Thanks in advance..

Amsoil 10-40 or Mobil 1 15-50 @ Wally World :popcorn::eek:4::22yikes:
add Syntech 10W 40 the list.
Here is a good link with lots of good info, http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Consumables.html
Welcome. All sorts of opinions and personal likes and dislikes here. Knowlege is power. M1 synthetic 10-40 without fuel saver. Rotella 15-40 is fine, but I think it is a little thick. The 5-40 synthetic (blue jug), is better IMHO. It starts thinner and gets around in the cold engine. Thicker oil is better for air cooled engines. Either will work fine. Rotella also makes a dino oil that is 10-30. That would be my choice and it is also diesel oil.
Part 2: Diesel oil is actually better than gasoline oil. This is an arguable point, so here is why I believe this. Diesel oil has soot inhibiters that clean and bust out old build up. The soot inhibiters also have a dark side though. There is a possibility that they could cause the wet clutch to slip. I have never had nor never known any one who had that problem but it "could" happen. The"could" may be a remnent of days gone by and just never changed.
Enjoy, there will be plenty to digest on here.

:flg:.

The guys that run RotellaT in the blue jug get a lot trouble free miles on the Goldwing. That is the 5W40 Synthetic RotellaT.

Not a single person that I know of has had a problem running RotellaT Synthetic in their Goldwings.

JMHO

I have 60,000 miles on Rotella T Synthetic 5w - 40 with good results. Along with Wal-Mart and possibly other places, it is also available at Pep Boys.
I switched to M1 15 50 Gold cap...have about 2k miles and no problems here .
Diesel Oils have a higher Shear point. They have to hold up to very high compressoion ratios, 18 to 1 all the way up to 22 to 1. This puts extream pressure on the connecting rods and crankshaft bearings. Oil cannot shear or squeeze out of those areas, just stay there and lubricate the parts while turning. Of course they work fine in Gas powered engines and are usually overkill for them. Personally I use Mobil 1 15/50 full syn. I usually find it a wallyworld.

So RotellaT 5w-40 is ok? Even when my Wing says 10W?
YES Put oil in your engine. About 4 QTs and ride.
Next question.
I have used the M1 15-50 for years on the '93 1500 I just sold with 125,550 miles on it. I changed it with a filter every 3-5K and it did not burn one drop of oil when I sold it this past weekend. I am a firm beleiver of syn oil and I use the Mobil 1. That is not to say that the other syns are not just as good if not better.

I buy it at Walmart in the 5 quart containers for $26.00. O'Reilly gets $7.49 per quart.

Just my .05 cents worth

The answer that will always be correct, regardless of the color or badging of the bottle, is if it meets the oil specs identified in the owners manual, you're good to go.
