Scenic and direct rarely go together, I-80 is the most direct and could be considered scenic across the Sierras. Crossing Nevada, I like Highway 50, the loneliest road in America. If you do take 50, watch your gas, there are only two gas points between Fallon, and Ely, (300 mi), that is Austin and Eureka.

How about coming out of Stockton going through

Stanislaus National Forest to hwy 6?
Not a problem, They just opened highway 4 & 108 yesterday because of melting what little snow was left, (they are absolutely gorgeous routes). They may get closed again briefly if we get anymore storms. Highway 120 is also an option, however it is still closed as of now. Highway 6 across Nevada is fine, it is the second loneliest road in America, LOL. From the bay area to the Sierras is pretty much all the same across the big central valley. BTW, if you take 6, you will probably see some wild mustangs out there.

If you are on 6 and going through Tonopah,NV to Ely,NV Get gas in Tonopah!! It's 170 miles between Ely and Tonopah and NO GAS in between! If you take 6/375(Extraterrestrial Highway/93, make sure to stop at the Little Alien Inn!) to Caliente, NV, there's gas in Ash Springs or Caliente. Take 148 to Cedar Breaks and 143 to Panguitch then 89/12 to Boulder http://goo.gl/maps/liNfN

flyerq68 nailed it...

If you've never been across US-50, you've got to give it a shot

Mr' Scoot, you did not mention when you plan this ride. May can be tricky time to cross the northern Sierra's. Fast spring storms are not uncommon that will drop snow at the upper elevations, your favorite weather site will be your best friend.

I 80 to Fernley Nevada and then on ALT 50 to Fallon is faster route than Hwy 50 from Sacramento

IF you change your mind and give Hwy 50 a go be sure to ride the old section of hwy 50 known as Nevada 722. Turn onto 722 just a few miles after Middlegate station and it brings you back to Hwy 50 just before Austin. This will save you from the most boring section of Hwy 50 as it runs ut through the Mts. - awesome stretch of road rather than around the Mts. I have ridden 50 more time than I can count and never get tired of this route.
The flat section on the east side of 722 is a good place to drop your wing's gas millage.
