You've got to take into consideration who is doing the study. The Insurance Institute does not have consumer safety as its first priority. Number One priority for the Insurance Institute is saving insurance companies money.

My guess is that if ran a GL head-on into a Smart at 40 MPH, the Smart would do ok. I wonder how a GL Airbag would do in that situation at protecting the rider. Would be about the same fight as a Smart into a Mercedes C-Class.

Smart gets good rating when compared to other vehicles it's size. The test had it hitting a car that weighed twice as much head on.
.
I see it as a fair test on what's on the road. The chances of two Smart cars hitting each other would be slim to none, hitting a typical size car is highly likely. They should have used a SUV as there are more of them on the road than cars, at least around here.

I don't know how "smart" it is. It is rated at 33/41 mpg, which is right in the range that my 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 gets (~34 mpg for the last three tankfuls used commuting). In fact, I had a Chevy Sprint (made by Suzuki) back in '85 that regularly got over 50 mpg (however I doubted its safety, which is one reason I traded it). This is progress?

It would be extremely smart if you were single or had no kids, and livied in San Francisco. Otherwise? Not in my eyes. I'd rather a fit.

Kinda' funny how people who ride around on vehicles that have zero protection, think of the Smart as not being a "real" vehicle.

It's a small car. Just like any other small car, it ain't gonna do so well if it hits a big car...

There are two in my small town. I think they look like funny little clown cars myself...

They shoulda named it the "Cute" Car 'cause it seems anything but "SMART" to drive one of these. Their obvious market demographic; people with little common sense. There are any number of options that get better mileage, haul 4 adults, costs less and are more substantial in a collision.

The real(tm) Smart is a next generation diesel. This car was blocked for years entry into the US for one reason or another, the only way they could finally get in was to wedge a POS gasoline engine in its stead:shrug:. The folks up in Canada have had the real(tm) Smart Diesel since I think 2003...
