Oldguy, If Garmin says the only thing they can do is have you send the unit in and have it replaced with a refurbished unit, the going rate is $200, but if you fuss and complain a little bit they can drop the price to $100 to try and make you happy. The latch on the back of my 2610 that holds the unit in the MC bracket broke and when I tried to buy a replacement part from Garmin, they told me they didn't sell parts but would replace the unit for $200. When I complained about 200 bucks just to fix a 3 dollar part, they dropped it to $100 real fast. I ended up buying a junk 2610 on Ebay for $15 in order to have spare parts.
