I am looking into getting a detector and was wondering what other riders have on their bikes and how they perform. I will be hooking it into the bikes audio system, so one with an audio out is needed.

It will be mounted on Jon's dash mount along with my iway.

Your comments and advice will be appreciated.

I have had several radar dectors. I find that Bell is far superior to any of the others I have owned. I am talking about any model of Bell. They seem to pick up futher.

The short answer: Valentine 1

The long answer: Valentine 1. It's the only detector that tells you the direction the signal is coming from and the number of transmitters.

Direction: You're riding along and your detector goes off. You see the police car behind the sign :D as you go by him. A few seconds later your detector goes off again. With a standard detector, you figure it's the radar in the car you passed. With a V-1, you see that the new signal is still in front of you - sure enough, there's another police car behind the NEXT sign!

Number of tx: You're detector goes off every time you travel a certain stretch of road, but, today, instead of one signal, the V-1 tells you that there are TWO - the normal junk, and a police officer using the junk to camoflauge his transmitter.

After you use a V-1, you'll feel like you're blindfolded if you use any other brand.

I've got the Valentine 1 and it is great but I have K40 Radar Detectors & Laser Diffusers in my 3 cars and on my motorcycle and they work great.

I use an Escort Passport 8500 X50 (and an older 8500) that I swap between my two bikes and my two vehicles. Based upon everything that I've seen from folks the V1 is the BEST, but I liked the cost and flexibility of the Passport. Maybe not as good as the V1, but it does work very well. I can actually tell that the X50 is somewhat improved over the older 8500.

Oh, and by the way, I never intentionally ride faster than the speed limit -- I just have the detector on board to "periodically" remind me of the speed limit in case I might have not been paying attention and let me speed drift higher.

I have both the Valentine 1 and Escort 8500. Both are about the same in terms of warning distance BUT... as said earlier, the V1's directional indicators are well worth the extra $100.

I have the Passport Solo. It is cordless, the batteries last forever. If you use thier plug they have buttons on them that you can push to mute the output. It has stealth mode etc, it does have a audio plug. I mount mine right on top of my dash and it sits there perfectly. It has saved my butt many times over. They all basically use the same technology, the only real difference is some of the extra features, like the V! indicators. But pretty much when mine goes off I slow it down and dont care where the cop is. Between my Cb and Radar detecotr I havent had a ticket in forever and I drive pretty fast. If you are on the highway alot use CH 19 it can really save your butt by talking and listening to the truckers.

Do any of them dim or shut their lights off completely? I would like audio only notification, especially at night.

thanks,
David M.

If I'm not mistaken, they (the warning lights) can be dimmed or completely shut down on both units.

If you want to run with audio only, there's little point in getting the V-1, since the visual indicators are it's biggest advantage. It has an automatic dimmer circuit that works pretty well.

Yes, The passport has a stealth mode. Its starts up faster, and their is only one little tiny tiny led light that flashes. That light is telling you that the unit is on an dwhat mode you are in, such as highway, city, or auto. The actual screen will be blank like its off until it detects sometings. This is the mode I use mine in, uses less battery. BTW, when you jump off your bike and forget to turn it off, it automatically senses no movement and will shut itself off after 30 minutes. No battery run down.

How do you hook up the Valentyne 1??? I only have a cigarette lighter socket to attach to an accessory type socket. Can you buy a hard wire kit to wire to your battery???

Valentine 1

xxxrider,

The Valentine 1 comes with a module to direct wire it.

I have read all the posts, several online reviews, and owned different models of radar detectors.

If you have owned a Valentine1 you will never go back to anything else. Knowing where and how many radars are out there makes all the difference in the world.

If cost is the big factor remember, you pay a little more up front, but as technology changes you can update your Valentine1 rather than buying a new one. Saves money over time and you always have the very best.

Crazy, They have a pretty neat hard wire kit available. I had one in my M3 and he wanted ot to stay or I would have taken it out. Thats how much I liked the hardwire kit. Did you get the Solo or not?
