RAM mount on clutch reservoir cover

I have a 1" RAM mount on the front clamp part of the clutch reservoir clamp. I am wanting to move the Zumo up higher so it sits above the cb switches, and with the arm I have on there now (short one) it blocks the switches. If I put a longer arm on, the angle isn't correct and the Zumo 550 can't be set right above the cb switch bank ... Has anyone put a RAM ball directly on the reservoir cover by drilling and tapping ? I wonder if the weight of the 550 would cause a problem for the cover?

I drilled and tapped mine and set it in with Red (high strength) Loctite, plus put a thinned hex nut under that to be sure since the metal of the cover was pretty grainy and brittle, as if investment cast. I used that for about three seasons with my Garmin 2730 mounted on the long Ram arm and that unit is way heavier than the Zumo 550 I use now. No problems at all with the Zumo. I did have some trouble with the 2730 causing the arm to self lower as I rode over bumps or RR crossings and solved that by making a rubber wedge to set between the bottom of the arm and the top of the reservoir cover. With either the Zumo or the 2730 the screen was "right there" in plain view, but not obstructing my driving vision or view of any gague or switch. You can buy a reservoir cover with the Ram ball already set in it, I think Cycle Gadgets may be one source; maybe Hal has one or contact Jon.

I did this a long time ago on both covers. I put JB weld on the screw threads so they wouldn't come loose, and then screwed the RAM balls on. You need a screw head with a low profile, because there isn't much room between the metal lid and the white plastic cover for the gasket under it.

And don't even think about drilling the hole with the cover on, or you'll ruin the cover and gasket under it, not to mention getting metal inside the reservoir.

I used a video camera and GPS (376) and never had any problems with either one in over 100K miles.

You don't have to worry about it leaking, since the gasket is UNDER the lid.

Also seen at Ram Mount - a plate with 1 inch ball and two holes. You remove the two screws that hold the cover and put the plate on top with longer screws. They have a ball on the side or in the middle. Also, replacement covers at

Yes I've also done just that, no problems at all, the Zumo 550 is now in just the right position for me as well.

I went the route of drilling the OEM cover and putting a Ram ball on it. I did not feel comfortable with the strength of the cover so I ordered a chrome cover with the Ram ball on it. This was more heavy duty and made better. I felt much better with this set up. :smile: However, I can not remember where I got it.

Thanks to all for the suggestions

I ordered a ball tapped for 1/4" X 20, and I'll use a small piece of all thread or a bolt to put it on the cover, after I tap the cover. A thin nut on the inside should hold it solid. That and a 3" arm should put the Zumo in the right spot ... Thanks again

Scatman,

Why not use a 1/4"-20 x 1/2" SS button-head cap screw? Drill a hole (no tapping) in the Reservoir Cover and install the screw from the underside of the Cover. Use a dab of BLUE Loktite on the threads to prevent the screw from loosening.

Clean, simple installation and the button-head is about as thick as a "jam" nut.

If you don't recognize a button-head screw, Google it...!

That might be a bit flimsy, mine is 3/8"X20. The inside nut needs to be pretty thin, Fred said, there is not much space.

+1 for motorcyclelarry mount. I put locktite on the ball threads to keep it from unscrewing. It hold my iWay 600 just fine, though I may need to scuff up the ball some.
