So I was riding home frrom my Honda dealership after they had installed ( I bought them ) evey light possible for the wing! Wow it lights up like a christmas tree.
Was on a 50 mph road in 4 gear when the engine was bauging down, and the back brake ( wheel ) locked on me. I stoped in the middle of an intersection, and could not go at all, With the Grace of GOD, no other cars were around, some how i made into a parking lot, would NOT move at all, I was so blessed that nothing happen on the busy road, Very busy road.
I hit the back brake a several times, again, an again, finally the wheel un locked. At that point i was still 40 miles from Home, and the Dealership just closed for the 3 days.
I made it home safely, Does it sound like a bad switch, any thoughts, Going back to Honda on Wed.

On a previous bike, had that happen. Turns out the rear master cylinder has a small return air hole, got plugged with crap (from poor maintenance and not flushing). It might all work out with a good brake flush, might need a rebuild. Also could be a crapped up caliper. A quick loosen of the rear brake bleeder will loosen the brake and let you get home at slow speeds.

I've seen this - but not specifically on a Gold Wing. Personally, I would remove all of the calipers and clean and inspect.

Flush the entire brake system while you're at it.

Here's the inside of a caliper from last week. This one was locking up sometimes, and other times just dragging. It cleaned up OK, and I installed new rubbers.

It's more common that ya think, especially for bikes that have been sitting.

No, I wasn't resting my foot on the brake. I just bought the bike from a Dealer in AZ, they said ( I paid for it , no ckoice ) to go over the bike , new fluids, and safety check.
It turns out no such thing happened.( I will get that $950 back if I have to take them to court.) The 2016 GL bike had 1002 miles went i bought it, In the 3 weekends ( not this weekend ) Since I v;e had it i put on 850 miles.
My Tech guy found that it was only running on 5 Cylinders, so he replace all spark plugs.
Now That i know this ( brake lockup ) i will have him go through the whole bike. I can't be worried that somewhere the bike will shut down. ( even though we all know that anything man makes will break, ) I have owned a 1993 GSX 1100G Suzuki, ( if any one may have known that bike ) It was a great bike I put all 66k miles on it, sold it because there are no more parts for it.
I will keep all updated on this problem.

This had been reported with some early year models of the GL1800. Often was the little return port in the master cylinder reservoir. Other potential causes include water constaminated brake fluid that has boiled (riding with your foot on the pedal), a dislodged pad spring, stuck slave cylinder(s), and over-filled master cylinder reservoir. If it resolved after cooling down a bit you have narrowed the choices.

That's too bad that happened to you. However, 1002 miles on a 2016 ?? Am I reading that correctly ?? That ALONE is a big red flag unless the bike has been checked out thoroughly by a TRUSTED mechanic that knows what he's doing. And I mean EVERYTHING checked.

I don't say this to be critical or "I told you .... ," I say it as a precautionary tale for the future on THIS bike. I'm not qualified, but I would get the ENTIRE bike checked by someone trusted who does know. Who knows what else lies in store for you on THIS bike ?? The brakes today, .......................and God knows what tomorrow.

If that 1002 miles is accurate, the bike was sitting forever.

Honda has been plagued with rear wheel brake lock-ups with several recalls to prove it. Yea, those recalls may be all prior to 2016, but have they really made any significant changes over those issues and have they still had newer ones still have a lock-up issue? I do not trust Honda brake fluid as I have found Honda fluid turn into jelly on me more than once. Taking the lid off the rear fluid reservoir is not supposed to be like popping the top off of a jar of vasoline.

A full check of the brakes and fluid flush and replace of a good quality dot-4 brake fluid that is not "Honda" would be top priority. If I were doing it, my first task would be a full flush and bleed of the front and rear brakes with something like Prestone Dot-4 synthetic. Then remove each caliper and pads to clean pistons, press them fully in and pump out just a little pressing them back in and out a little again before going to the two front calipers. I would be looking for how easily the pistons go back in. I would also make sure that the reservoirs are not over filled when any caliper has its pistons pushed all the way in.

Sitting up can be absolutely detrimental. Had an 82 CX 500 Turbo when I was young in the Navy. Only prepped fuel and tank during a 9 month deployment. After getting home and getting it running my front brakes did as your back brakes did. Had to break out the tool kit and crack the bleeders to get back home. Take your time and you'll get it all worked out.

Unlike Facebook you're in the right place for information, the people here really know their stuff. Some of us on this board don't have the best "bed side manner" but for the most part everyone will try to help with good to great suggestions :) Please keep us posted.

Truest thing I've read all day! I really admire the board members for their knowledge and willingness to impart that knowledge to help another member. And it seems like most of us have been to charm school, for our bed-side manners are pretty good! 🤣 😲😂
