My wife and I would like to spend a week with the grand kids during the month of June. Kids(ages 18,16,11 desire beach location while us old folks would just like to "hang out". Do you have any suggestions on a decent location with reasonable rates?

Emerald Isle, NC is a nice beach area. They have a good selection of Hotels/Motels, RV Parks, B&Bs and beach house rentals. Should be something in your price range. Check it out.

jacksonville fla has really good beaches. very few restrictions compared to places like myrtle beach sc. no glass containers on tthe beach, no dogs until after 6pm....that's about it. small boardwalk, free outdoor movies every other friday, good beachside restaurants. bicycle the beach, really good surfing/kitesurfing, kayaking...lots of stuff to do within 50 miles.

Reasonable - not exceeding $80.00 - $100.00 total/night. We have been up and down the East coast from Virginia on South to Key West. Camped along the West coast of Florida. Spent a couple of days in Gulfport prior to Katrina but not on the beach. Grandkids are wanting to try out the Gulf so wondered what you suggest for along the Gulf coast of Mississippi. Beach locations/motels or hotels would be helpful.

I don't know what reasonable cost is, I guess that depends on how much one pays or does not pay in taxes! Anyway I would recommend Nags Head area of North Carolina. Great beaches and during the week usually not crowded.

You can rent a cabin/cottage to sleep 5 without much problem. Get something a block or so from the beach will safe some money over beachfront.

VA Beach has specials all the time, you might try Hotels.com or the other ticket places to see if you can find a good price on a motel on Oceanfront. Sandbridge just south of the Beach is more like Nags Head and there are many cabin/cottages for rent.

We are wanting any recommendations you may have specific to the Mississippi Gulf coast. We want to try the Gulf rather then Atlantic options. Thinking of motels/hotels along Mississippi gulf coast that may be along the beach or have beach access which you might care to recommend. Grandkids want to spend their days frolicking amongst the sandy shores.

I grew up on the beaches of SoCal and thought they were the best. I've been to Hawaii many times and thought those beaches were the best. I've been to the Florida Keys and thought those beaches were the best. But after all of this my favorite beaches are in the Fort Walton and Destin, Florida area, in the pan-handle. Absolutely beautiful, sugar white beaches and warm, crystal clear water ~ the best I've seen anywhere.

Damn, these guys don't bother to read your post of think about where you posted....lol

So, in that price range, you probably aren't going to get a "walk out your room onto the sand" type of accomodation during peak summer season without a lot of homework and calling around...

Diamondhead is a Golf Community/Country Club to the west of Gulfport that has condo rentals---they aren't on the beach (in fact, they are on the north side of I-10 relative to the beach), but if you want to stay somewhere cheaper and within a short drive of the beach that doesn't have as much of a hotel feel to it, I'd check them out...I work at the NASA facility not far from there and have a commuter pad on one of the courses for when I don't feel like driving back to LA. If you're a golfer, I understand they package condo rentals with green fees, so it might be something that interests you. They also have multiple pools within the neighborhood that are available when you stay---after playing in the brown water of the gulf, you might prefer to spend some time in a pool...:nojoke:

Long beach is a nice community and has some nice beach to play on, but not much in the way of hotel lodging...you really are looking at Bay St Louis, Gulfport, or Biloxi.

Also could check out what the casinos have available...The Grand, Boomtown, IP (Imperial Palace), Isle of Capri, Island View, Hard Rock, and Beau Rivage are all casinos that either have hotels on the casino property or close to them. Sometimes you can get a deal from them, worth looking into...

you could also start checking out vrbo.com and craigslist in gulfport for vacation rentals...occasionally you find something nice at a reasonable rate...again, worth looking.

You should check out The Shed BBQ while you are down...the original in Ocean Springs burned down recently, but there is one in Gulfport...worth a stop if you're in the area...literally "fall off the bone" ribs like I've never seen before.

Gee, some people just don't read do they....

Anyhow, Some of the Casino's offer decent packages and special pricing if you're doing a Monday-THursday stay. With Kids, the Island View in Gulfport, The Grand or The Isle in Biloxi and the Hollywood (Not on the beach, but really nice anyhow) in Bay St. Louis are all good. Beau Rivage in Biloxi is fantastic, but by your definition of reasonable...they're out...but worth checking out anyhow.

Holiday Inn in here in Long Beach is nice, quiet and reasonable across the street from the beach.

I have a Visiting the MS Gulf Coast travel magazine here at the shop I could mail you if you want it. Just PM me or email me ([email protected]), your address and I'll kick it to you.

Look forward to having y'all down.
