Diode on my headlight modulator died. As of now, I just closed the circuit and everything works. I can turn modulator off manually. I would like to make it legal so it will not function from sunset to sunrise. Will a standard light diode from radio shack work or will my lights modulate every time I cross under streetlights?

My understanding is a standard photodiode will work. However, the company does sell replacements for when one fails. Seems it was like $8 shipped when I needed one many years ago, came with the cable and connector.

If it's a Kisan, I would call them. I know they replaced a broken tailblazer for free once. They might just drop one in the mail for you.

It's a Signal Dynamics. I tried calling them but no answer:shrug:. Radio Shack has a pack of 3 for $3.99 that I think will work. I went to get them only to get to the counter and find out I left my wallet at home.

Alrighty, I went back with my wallet and purchased a pack of 5 (not 3) for $3.79. I wired it into my modulator and it works perfect. Easy and cheap fix. John, you can certainly have one along with anyone else. If you can't see me in person, I'll mail one to you. I have 3 left.

Bucfan11, would you have the part number handy? I would like to purchase a packet prior to the RS in my area closeing. I am sure if I went in and asked for the diode no one would know of what I spoke.

When I get home from work I'll post it up.

I took mine out and replaced with switch. no more turning on or off unless I want it too. Shady spots vs sunny spots... switch is the way to go imho

Mine too has a switch, simply flip your bright light on and off within 1 second and it turns the modulator on/off. I only want the sensor for legal purposes and for less than $1 to make it that way was a no brainer.

No you do not have a switch. What I am talking about is a switch that is in place of the photo cell. The problem I ran into which was a major issue during my escorting was shifting from riding in sunny areas to shaded areas and the system would think it was going from day to night and night to day.

This meant the modulation was starting and stopping on its own which is very confusing for the drivers around you. My photo cell is installed on the bike however it is no longer connected to the head light modulator. In lieu of the photocell I have a switch wired into the modulator.

Operation of the system works just like normal however I have a master override switch so the system will not automatically power up or down at random. The system can still be controlled with the timing of the high low beam switch manipulation as long as I have the system armed with the master switch.

I hope I have not confused you yet. The only downside to the setup is remembering to turn the master switch off around the correct time of day but you get used to it quickly. In over 300,000 miles in every state in CONUS and beyond I've never been pulled over because of the head light modulator modulating when it should not. I have been pulled over for it modulating in the middle of the day because the police didn't know that it was legal. But since the photocell is clearly visible as an installed part of the bike there's no way for anybody to know if is actually a functional part of that system or not and it doesn't even come into question.

But do whatever you want

That is the way mine worked after I closed the circuit when the diode went bad, no need for a switch. I just twisted the two wires together. I do understand what you are saying and think mine would have been fine without an operational diode but for $1, why not?

The Kisan is programmable, program it correctly when you first install it and you never have the "shady" areas or high beams behind you to worry about.

DJ - good tip about the switch. I may install one even though I have never had a problem with shade. But, I have only about 400 miles on the modulator thus far.
