Short answer is no you don't have to remove the mirror
to remove mirror cover.
I've replaced the mirror on mine and all you have to do is like the other person said. I didn't even take the trim screw out I just loosened it to let the thin piece that goes under the bottom two screws shift. Not hard at all. I would recommend you buy some 8 mm bolts and replace the phillips head screws. Makes it much easier to get them in and out if you ever have to do it again. My dealer put the bolts in when it was assembled at the dealership and I'm glad he did. BTW you will have to push the mirror over the release in order to get to the two bolts nearest the rider.
