Red Rock Canyon 2 resized.jpg
This was 2 years ago. A group of 5 of us went to Death Valley for our first time. I have grown up in Calif. and I have ridden many many miles of Calif. roads but I have never been to Death Valley.
This photo is in the Red Rock Canyon near Mojave.

I was fortunate enough to have been buzzed, so to speak, by fighter jets when I was in DV on my way to Vegas. It scared the s**t out of me at the time. Unbeknownst to me at that time ( I looked it up later ) is an Air Force base, I believe, called China Lake that is stationed in that area. Two fighter jets passed over my head simultaneously. I mean RIGHT OVER my head !! Scared me so much that I ducked as I didn't hear them until they were right over me.

It was only a few seconds before I realized what the jets were. As I watched them doing their maneuvers in the distance I was PRAYING they would come back and buzz me again. They didn't. A truly great experience on the bike.

There is an area outside of Panamint Springs, next to Death Valley, that is known as "Star Wars Canyon". The "correct" name is "Rainbow Canyon". Nevertheless folks do visit the "Father Crowley Overlook" which provides a commanding view of this canyon area, specifically in the hopes of observing US Jets navigating the canyon at high speed, at extremely low altitudes, around and inside the canyon itself. If you Google and/or search Google Maps for any of the above names, you will find that the location is easy to access from Highway 190 just to the west of Death Valley.

Don't know the future of the flights through Rainbow Canyon since a Hornet crashed there a few months ago. It killed the pilot and injured 7 spectators. I haven't heard if the flights have resumed or not. I would assume knowing how the Navy investigates incidents of this type. It might be some time if they do resume.

Planning to visit Death Valley next month. Is it a good idea?
Check the weather. You might not want to be there if any rain is expected. It can get quite cold there, but probably comfortable during the day.

NAS China Lake. Go Navy.
I was in a fighter squadron, VA 212, and when we would return from Nam I was part of a maintenance crew that would go to China Lake while the pilots would practice bombing missions and sometimes we would go to Fallon Naval Air Station for bombing practice. Fallon had one casino that we would frequent for entertainment.

I grew up in Twentynine Palms and yes the desert can be cold but usually some part of every day is good riding weather.

I remember going Southbound on US 395 once and seeing what looked like a drone plane being shot down. Do they do that at China Lake?
