Am departing Tennessee, below Nashville, and heading toward Mississippi on the Natchez Trace. I plan on making it all the way and then heading down to lower Mississippi for a few days stay. Am interested for those of you that have ridden the Trace as to what exits have the best/reasonalbe motels and best place to stay when I get to the bottom of Mississippi. Any info is appreciated. I am riding solo on this trip and want to see all I can and enjoy the Trace to the fullest.

Thanks for your Info.

Ken,

Having lived in Spring Hill for a while, I can tell you, south of Starkville/Toupelo, the exits get pretty lean with the exception of around Jackson and Natchez. Download the 'lodging' list from the official Trace page on the NPS.gov website...it's not always up to date, but they do list some of the smaller town places to stay/do. Just a thought - tent it in the camping sections for FREE! Around Natchez, besides the Casino hotels, there are some great B&B's and least cost hotel chains. Hit the info centers at Kosciusko and Rocky Springs for the info/deals there. There are several state parks on or near the trace that have nice cabins (no buffets like in TN though) if you want to stay away from the chains. Hit the Natchez website for deals/recommendations there - we have stayed at The Eola hotel many times and love it. Be sure to hit Fat Mamma's for some tamale's and their signature Knock you Nekkid Ritas!

Have a great time, and if you get over here to the Gulf Coast - be sure to stop in and say hi (Sunni's Cycle & Marine in Long Beach).

Jim

BTW - the falls along the lower section are flowing!

Hey Ken, I live in Jackson MS and ride the trace all the time. First, one warning...the trace is closed from I-55 in Ridgeland MS. to Hwy 49. I am posting a photo of the detour around. The area that is closed is not important because there is not much in that area anyway. The detour won't really take you any longer either. Before you get to Ridgeland, you ride past the Ross Barnett Reservoir along the water. There is an overlook that makes a good stop there. Ridgeland is a main town so there are hotels and restaurants in the area. When you resume at Hwy 49, Clinton MS is the next exit and has hotels and restaurants. Around 50 miles from Clinton is Port Gibson which is close to the Mississippi River. I recommend getting off the trace there and riding out to Windsor Ruins. Right around there is a town called Lorman MS and has a restaurant called the old country store with some good country cooking. I am not sure about hotels in that area. Natchez MS is the end of the trace with nice river overlooks and restaurants. I hear the bed and breakfasts in Natchez are nice too along with the antebellum homes. If you need any specifics, just PM me!

If you're around Natchez at lunch time Mammy's Cupboard is a must stop. Cultural experience and excellent food, including the extensive selection of pies.
