Ok guys I will be coming from San Antonio, Texas up hwy 83. I will be staying in North Platt Neb. I have been to Sturgis one time and we rode to see the presidents, devils tower, through a cave, saw buffalo and a bunch of switchbacks where there were small bridges that we went under and a water fall on the side of the road. Its approx. 374 miles from North Platt to Deadwood. I need to try and see the above sights on the way to Deadwood. I am also leaving from there the next morning to Billings Montana. I need to know the best scenic route for that part of my trip also. Thanks in advance. It will be around the end of August, first week of Sept.

I can't see the little turns but this is my first route that I worked up. Highway 83 to Murd, left on hwy 90, left on 240 through the badlands to Wall. Left on 90 again to rapid city. Left on 16 elk vale road. Left on 79 south, right on 36. right on 16a, (iron mountain road). Right into keystone. back out 244 to Mt. Rushmore back to keystone to 16a, left on hwy 16, right on 385 to deadwood. A lot of turns, don't know what time it will take but don't want to arrive in deadwood to late in the day. I might stay at the holiday inn resort in deadwood and then walk half a block to the Silverado casino. Let me know what you think.

If you don't want to do I-90 take Hwy 44 from White River all the way into Rapid City where it hooks up with Hwy 79. You will still see a lot of the badlands without dealing with the traffic. This has been my route of choice riding to the hills over the past many years.

It's a good idea to get fuel in White River at the Cenex Station (just a couple blocks further north on 83 from the junction with 44) before heading west. There is fuel at Interior but it is usually a little more $.

Thanks guys its getting closer hope the weather cools off. Now we are staying at the Air Force Base north of Box Elder. Looks like we are breaking up the ride for 2 days so we can see more sights. Hope they don't enforce the dress code on a motorcycle, I know i wouldn't pass. May have to stop on side of the road and put some clothes on. lol. We are finally getting a few days rain here, its been very hot and dry.

I just talked with some friends that went to see their son at the Air Force base in Idaho. Yes, they would need helmets, leather jacket and gloves to be able to ride on base. They were leaving the bike off base and getting picked up to go on base.
