Planning a trip that will include Yellowstone and Glacier national parks. There are a number of routes that are marked scenic on my map. Interstate highways are not an option. We would also like to keep out of Helena and Great Falls if possible.

We've ridden most of the routes around Flathead lake and West Glacier so are looking for a new way to go. TIA

I've done the following route by car in reverse and really enjoyed it.

From West Yellowstone, take 287 to Ennis http://www.ennischamber.com/, Virginia City http://virginiacity.com/ http://virginiacitymt.com/, Twin Bridges.

41 to Dillion.

278 to Wisdom.

43 to US93. By the way, I remember 43 (and I think 278 also - it's been a number of years ago) as very lonesome roads through vast nothingness but enormous awesomeness. Fill your tank, stomach and water bottles in Dillion. Not sure how many replenishing places there are between there and Hamilton but I'm sure there are a couple . . . maybe.

US93 to Missoula (through the Bitterroot Valley - I love this area of MT)

If you are into elk hunting, stop at Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in Missoula. Some awesome mounts on display there. Consider becoming a member. They've done a great job in many states. I think one of the founders may be the brother of one of my roommates in college but I've never been able to confirm that. http://rmef.org/

An intereresting place for us was the National Bison Range near Moiese, about 50 north, northwest of Missoula. But you may have seen all the bison you wanted to see while in Yellowstone. http://www.fws.gov/bisonrange/nbr/

Montana: So many roads. So many sights. So little time. "The Last Best Place!" Disclosure: I was born and raised there. You can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy.

I suggest:

  • North to Ennis, Cardwell and then Boulder
  • Take I15 north from Boulder through Helena to just past Wolf Creek
  • Continue to Augusta, Choteau and Browning
  • Then head west on HWY2
I prefer this open Montana country to the forests west of the divide. Your in view of the Rockies from just past Wolf Creek all the way to Glacier.

The short stretch of Interstate is really a nice ride.
