Scenic Suggestions

Never been to ND. Got to be cooler than Tenn. in July(maybe). Any particularly scenic areas(mountains, hill country) to recommend? I like twisties but have little use for touristy areas. Or major metropolitan areas. Figure the wide open spaces far out-number the populated areas. Will be working my way towards Glacier National. Hopefully via the road less traveled. AND cooler!

Bob, I live in northcentral ND near the Canadian border. ND has some nice scenery and wide open roads. Just be aware of the heavy truck traffic in the western half of the state. We have an oil boom going here, and pretty much everything from hwy 83 west is truck traffic. The further west you go, the worse it gets.

Hwy 2 from Minot to Williston is quite congested, as is hwy 85 from Williston south. I used to ride in the western part of ND several times a year, but not anymore. Too risky for me. There are accidents every day due to the high volume of traffic, especially heavy trucks. The roads are taking a beating also. Not a motorcycle friendly environment.

I hate to discourage anyone from visiting our state, as it does have things worth seeing. Just be careful in the west. Also you will then have to cross MT. I have done this in July. HOT. Eastern MT is like an oven. Plan on going early in the am before the heat kicks in. 90-100's are not uncommon.

Thanks for the details. Hwy 2 looked like the "perfect" route to Glacier. And thanks for the heads up on the heat. That was my main reason for traveling a northern route to avoid the heat.
It's brutal down here right now. Just got back in from NC and decided no more Bike travel till Sept., at least!
