I am trying to build of a shim kit of the common sizes I will need to do the valves and I would like to see what others have found when they took theirs apart.

If you have removed your cams to change shims and still have the records of what was originally in your bike from the factory, please post that info. If we can get a decent sampling, we can determine what the most common shim sizes will be needed in advance of pulling cams, since you typically only need to drop down one shim size.

Below is what was in my own bike from the factory.

This was on a 03 32,000 4 intack valves at .005 and 1 at .004 1 at .006
Exhaust valves checked out at .009 or tight .010

My OE shims were as follows:

LEFT HEAD

I made more changes than was sane in my effort to get the final values as close to center of spec as possible. Notice the odd ball nominal 208 shim form the factory -- it is a bit darker in color than the other shims too.

Randy; I was gonna look to be sure before I answered, but I forgot and no one else has given you the info; so I "think" the answer is:

(1.) the numeric markings are nominal and not exact

(2.) the approximate measure is in thousandths of an inch.

But, I am not sure. Typically, one can either take a good quess and use the next size or two in the direction you want to go; or (better) you can use calipers to measure the original shim and then find a replacement that is the correct difference to get you where you want to go. Like Fred already said; in the vast majority of cases the change is just one size and almost always with the intent to make the valve rest on its seat longer.

as you can the #200 to a #210 were the shims I had to deal with when I did my valve check. A # 200 shim is a 2.000 MM and that is a .079 th. shim. each shim goes up or down in size by .001 th.

Fred was putting together a list of the factory installed shim sizes under the valve lifter buckets.
To adjust the valves on the GL1800 the clearance between the cam and the lifter is checked with a feeler gauge. If out of tolerance the lifter bucket has to be removed and the shim inside the bucket replaced with a different size (thickness).
