We are planning a trip to South Dakota right after Labor Day. We plan to see all the usual places, Mt. Rushmore, Black Hills, Badlands, etc. I am looking for some advice on other great rides and, in particular, a good central location to stay. We will probably get a condo, if possible. After a long day of riding, sight seeing and hiking, we like to park the bikes and stay somewhere close to good restaurants and other entertainment. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Devil's Tower is a nice day trip as is the Little Big Horn Battlefield.

We stay in Lead, just a mile down the road from Deadwood.

We have stayed in Deadwood. We have also stayed in Keystone, good places to eat and lots of little shops. Close to Rapid City, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and miles or riding to be done. Hill City is a nice small town close by also.

I cast my vote for Spearfish as a good place to stay while visiting the Black Hills area. Spearfish is a nice, clean small town and one of the best mc roads in the Hills, Spearfish Canyon (Alt. 14), starts/ends there.

We have been going out to the Sturgis Rally for quite some time now and
we stay in Rapid City as you have a large choice or food, hotels, and night life. Make sure you ride the road from Johnson Siding to Sturgis-All are great roads and fun also the Needles and Iron Mountain road

We stayed in Rapid City and it worked well. They have a good dealer there if a need should arise, and most every place is just a nice day ride. Rushmore and Crazy Horse both have nice shows after dark, but the critters also come out in time for your ride back to your room. I didn't try to rent a condo, but we have timeshares and there was only one listed for that whole area

Like the others have said. If you like a larger town Rapid City is the place to stay. If you like the smaller town, Lead, Deadwood, Spearfish, Hill City, or maybe Belle Fourche would be the places to stay.

we stayed in Deadwood the 1st time we ever visited and it was fun for that one time. we stayed right downtown and it was nice to be able to park the bike at the end of the day and walk to bars, resturants and casinos. I think I'd stay in Spearfish the next time. It's only a little run on the interstate to Deadwood, Sturgis or other places; but if you want the scenic route, you can ride spearfish canyon road to Deadwood and Lead.

We stayed in Deadwood last year and loved it, plenty to see and there was some good food to be had. There was a restaurant up the road from the super 8 in deadwood, don't know the name but it had the best steak i have ever eat. If I ever go back, Deadwood would be were I would stay if not there then Keystone. The only thing i regret was not going into custer state park, our friends did and said it was great. Enjoy your trip.

Wife and I and another couple were out there last july and rented a nice small two bedroom cottage in a campground west of rapid city. All the comforts of home and had a grill, air conditioning, small kitchen, picnic table and a carport. We went to a grocery store and got enough food for breakfast and suppers the four nights we stayed. It was great, make a nice breakfast, ride all day, come back to cabin in the early evening and grille steaks and wash it all down with jack and lemonade and chat with others in the campground. it cost us 600.00 for the four nights with four people, the camp ground was very nice and quiet at night. It was our first motorcycle trip and we all had a great vacation even though we didnt quite get to see everything we wanted to, but we enjoyed everything we did see and do, and will go back again to catch stuff we missed. The campground is called LAKE PARK CAMPGROUND AND COTTAGES. The website is LAKEPARKCAMPGROUND.COM if you are interested

Interesting. Me and my supervisor(wife) will be in Aberdeen SD until labor day, then going out to the badlands. Staying a night at Cedar Pass Lodge at Badlands National Park. Its a beautiful ride on 240 through the park. Of course the Custer, Rushmore and Crazy Horse just for the heck of it is a good idea.

Hit me up on PM if you'd like more details.

Dont miss Iron Mtn. Road. It runs from Mt. Rushmore to Custer Park. It has several pigtail bridges (google it) on. They are very cool. Also Spearfish is a great place to stay, and the canyon is also good riding.

Hey if your in the Hills any of the locations to stay are great. Many great things to see in the Black Hills, and some great roads to ride. Do yourself a favor and spend one day and go a little farther east, over to the badlands. Take a ride around the interior loop, from Rapid it will be exit 110 at Wall, SD. Head south and that loop will bring you right back out on the interstate. Beautiful ride through what I would call South Dakota's Grand Canyon. It's amazing the difference in terrain from Rapid City and the hills area, just one hour east. You won't be disappointed.
