They've changed the displayed map source (was Google) because it's now costing $$$.

Current map is free, open source.

Hate to point to another forum, but for those that may have noticed a recent map change to Spotwalla maps, here's the response from Jason:

There's a bit of functionality that needs to be fixed up as well.

...for those that don't know what Spotwalla is:

Yes, I noticed this on my last ride here in Arkansas. Have to say, I'm really disappointed with the map change!! I've lost the two lane road detail that was so very useful. My practice was to take a screen shot of my route for the day then post that on the forum. That is no longer an option. With map detail gone, it looks like a bunch of dots drawn on the screen with no real reference point. :frown2:

Switch to a different overlay...

Seems to be a lot better using 'pencil' for details.

I looked at that. It has a lot of lines to represent roads. But no labels for anything. Here it is with the pencil map.

Maybe SpotWalla should just switch back to Google ask for donations to pay for the Google fees.

I would certainly be willing, especially since I use it so much!

I think I'd rather the fees be used to keep the servers on and the functionality in place - since 2011.

You can read the words directly from Jason here:

There's also some conversation on the web forum for Spotwalla - in part:

Jason said:
There's no doubt that Google Maps has the most detail and advanced functionality. Should we ever get to the point where we have to start charging for SpotWalla, allowing users to choose their desired mapping flavor is a distinct possibility. Until then, we're going to strive to keep things free and simple.
Remember, you get what you pay for.
