A friend of mine has a 2006 Goldwing, running it below 2000 rpm's it stumbles when you try to accelerate, also it surges at idle.
above 2k rpm's it seems to run fine. no check engine light is on. he tried to reset the ecm but it didn't change anything. has anyone had this
problem before and what could be a fix for it.

thanks, mark

it does have good gas in it and have added liquid performance. once he rides it and gets it up to operating temperature it
doesn't seem to change things. he has put new spark plugs in it and it didn't help. hasn't checked the wires though.

Ok so you don't have the cold stumble that has been an issue with our bikes, check the throttle position sensor it may have a dead spot in it you can use a multimeter for that, also check the air filter for any obstructions if your down the rabbit hole this deep verify that the throttle body is securely attached to the intake manifold. and that you don't have any vacuum hose leaks. And lastly confirm smooth throttle cable engagement from the grip to the throttle body assembly.

Great advice from mbazzy. Im sure others will chime in soon.

I had a similar problem that got worse over time. After new spark plugs, air filter service and mechanical checkout, I tried different fuel additives and the problem persisted. Then I read about Techron and how it can clean the fuel system for fuel injected engines. There are several versions, but the one to buy is the fuel system cleaner. If I remember correctly, 1 bottle treats 20 gallons. I divided the bottle between 2 fill-ups and the problem disappeared. Although I always burn top-tier fuel, Id attribute the problem to dirty fuel injectors. Several empirical studies and youtube tests show Techron is usually at the top of the list for FI cleaner for fuel additives.

Good luck.

Smart [call/good recommendations] here........I, also every long trip, that I plan on taking (when I know that I'll be going through a full tank of gas in a day) add {one ounce/ per gallon } of Techtron, to my fuel, to help those injectors stay clean.. (I honestly have no idea if it's truly working or not) BUT my bike with 80,000 miles still Purrrrrrrs like a kitten, and it make me feel good believing, that as I'm ride'nnn down that long divided highway, that my injectors are "thank'nnn" me...:p

Ronnie, I thought you were a Seafoam guy.

When my 2005 with 125,000 miles on it started doing what you are describing I needed to replace the alternator. Good luck in tracking down the issue. Michael

Oh! I still am a S/Foam guy (although I did try Techtron) the last two times (and truthfully) I now, really have to admit, that I can not tell the difference, between the two brands) IN ALL HONESTLY here, how can anybody really know IF any brand is truly working??? All I know is that my engine "appears" to be operating smoothly as it purrrrrrrs down the highway. Is it just my imagination (and maybe wishful thinking) that it's working??? HAS ANYBODY TAKE'NN APART A FUEL INJECTOR, and checked for cleanliness....
{it's kinda like a freshly, cleaned car, always seems to run better than a dirty car} (if yea get my drift here!)

so here is a update on my friends 06 goldwing. the problem seemed to be with the spark plugs. and when he replaced them the problem didn't go away, after further checking he found that one of the new plugs had a crack in it an was jumping spark to the engine case. he replaced it and it seems to be running fine now.. thanks for all your help.

zukm109,
Many "thanks" for getting back to us with the fix results.....I bet that you helped out many other(s) on this board... My problem was a bad spark plug wire (once replaced, she runs smooth and great again)

This thread reminded me to try some fuel injector cleaner in my Goldwing, I had used the cleaner a couple months ago because after sitting unused for 7 years the bike didn’t seem to be starting as quickly as it should, the bottle is supposed to treat 21 gallons of diesel fuel or gasoline so I poured in about 1/3 bottle and after the first tank of gas it was definitely starting easier. So 10,000 miles later it has this annoying low speed stumble so a few days ago I added another 1/3 of the bottle to the tank, the annoying low speed stumble disappeared ! Yesterday after a 300 mile ride I poured the last 1/3 of the bottle into the tank, the instructions on the bottle recommend using it every 3,000 miles I don’t plan on using it that often but I plan to start using it a couple times per year. Not sure where I bought it it was either Walmart or true value and it cost about $8 . The brand is Gumout but I’m thinking any brand of injector cleaner will probably work.
