advised no way pull anything with a subframe mounted hitch.

Stayed away from direct frame mount for just that reason.
Pardon my ignorance here, but I am about to buy a trailer hitch. Can you please point me at pics of the two different types?

I am a retired Mechanical Engineer and would like to check both types out before making a decision.

Thanks for that. Good pics are scarce as I guess the manufacturers are coy about letting out too much info for people to copy.

If you have not discovered any cracks in the sub-frame then perhaps the sub frame style is OK. I seem to find a lot of comments regarding many thousands of miles towing with them and no problems.

The main load (horizontal) of towing appears to be the same in both types, it is just the vertical tongue load that is handled differently.

Providing the tongue weight is handled correctly when loading the trailer, my guess at this point is favorable for the sub-frame version. Given that I have seen one at auction for 140-bucks.
