There was a post started the other day regarding "what's the best hitch".

I have a sub frame Kuryakan on my '10 and I do pull with it and intend to pull even heavier loads in the future. Thus far I have had confidence in it.

Anyway, a gentleman replied to that post and advised no way pull anything with a subframe mounted hitch.

I guess when I put my subframe hitch on that also uses the crash bars, my logic was everything "seems" strong enough to me and as a bonus it attaches to points that were designed to take a load already and distribute that to the main frame without messing up the frame. The entire frame crack history in the back of my mind.

Stayed away from direct frame mount for just that reason.

My logic or lack of being the the shin bone is connected to the thigh bone.

Having some second thoughts..

Should I be?

Contact Tom directly

If you do contact Tom direct make sure you have plenty of room on your hard drive, he will send you a LOT of information. I read a reply from him some where that went something like "It has been said that if you ask me the time I will tell you how the watch was made" along those lines....

He definitely has an opinion and can back it up to.

Thanks Eidolon, all the PhotoBucket pics are missing.

It's a pity as it seems a very comprehensive coverage of god, bad and ugly.
You are welcome. I would have liked to have seen the other photos to. Damn internet keeps changing.
Still a pretty thorough discussion. I am fairly sure Tom Finch would be happy to discuss this further with you. Just be careful his "discussion mode" has been self described as exhaustive.

Thanks for that. Good pics are scarce as I guess the manufacturers are coy about letting out too much info for people to copy.

If you have not discovered any cracks in the sub-frame then perhaps the sub frame style is OK. I seem to find a lot of comments regarding many thousands of miles towing with them and no problems.

The main load (horizontal) of towing appears to be the same in both types, it is just the vertical tongue load that is handled differently.

Providing the tongue weight is handled correctly when loading the trailer, my guess at this point is favorable for the sub-frame version. Given that I have seen one at auction for 140-bucks.
What I got from the discussion was that when you hit a pot hole the hitch being at the far end of the moment arm accelerates very fast. This loads the tongue with momentary high stress and if the hitch itself is not anchored vertically then you stress the sub frame. The sub frame being less substantial then the main frame I would think that the less stress you put there the better off everything else is to.

I will probably end up with a Revco because of weight, 8 Lbs., it's attached to the main frame and it just looks very well constructed...

Just my 2¢ adjusted for inflation .000002;)
