Surprise.....on low speed wobble

1744 Views 25 Replies 21 Participants Last post by  MatadorMkV
Since I've had my wing, almost 3 yrs now with 62K miles, I've always had a low speed wobble. Yes, the one everyone talks about. It didn't make any difference on the brand of tire, new tire, old tire, with dyna beads or without dyna beads. It was always there. Didn't bother me, because it was never noticable unless I took my hands off the handlebars. So I didn't take my hands off the handlebars.

Well, about 2000 miles ago, had to have the left front brake pads changed. Wobble gone!

Not wanting to start any arguements here, just wanted to let ya'll know about it.

Thanks,
David

... thanks for the info ...

I never had a wobble.

Last year I changed out my rear wheel and front brake pads at the same time...
... After doing that, I immediately had a slight wobble
.... I thought it might the new rear wheel.
The wobble got much worse as the front tire wore.

Last week, I changed out the front brake pads and installed
a new front tire
... and now the wobble is completely gone.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting!
My wobble went away with the All Balls install.
If I turn loose of the bars at low speed there is a wobble, always has been from day one. I guess there always will be, so, I do not let go of the bars at low speed.

Same here. Interesting on the brake pad thing though.
never had the wobble. guess i lucked out
Nothing else happened besides the brake change? I can't fathom how a worn set of pads could factor into wobble. A frozen caliper in conjunction with a rough or sticky spot on the rotor might do it. Very curious.
Wobble question

When you changed the brake pads, did you take the front wheel off?....Perhaps when you reinstalled it(if you did) your axle got repositioned just slightly, or the torque on the axle nut was unknowingly changed slightly. Just grasping at straws...it would be very interesting to put the old pads back on just temporarily to see if the wobble returned. Can't blame you if you don't....would be like looking a gift horse in the mouth......inquiring people want to know. You didn't have the rotors off did you, and maybe change the tightness on the mounting bolts or exchange positions of the rotors?...I think you can swap sides on the rotors also. If the rotor mount bolts were unevenly torqued or over torqued and you unknowingly corrected this then that is another possibility. Where's Sherlock Holmes when you need him?
More wobble thoughts

It would be very interesting to get two Gold Wings together in a shop...one with wobble and one without. Then start exchanging parts one at at time and test riding in between until you found the culprit gremlin. Many riders would no doubt be grateful for results of such an experiment.

Might be more to it than that.
The torq on the Steering head bearing could be one of the problems.
I know this is real dumb , but i have never started a post, i have always just commented on it, or learned from others response. How do you post a new post, i can't find an icon to click on?

Go to the top of the Board front page. There is a icon that says New Thread

Took the bike into the shop for regular service. Bought the extended service maintenance agreement from the dealership. It's more than paid for itself. About to have 64K service done on it, which includes valve adjustments, etc. which will still be under the agreement. Back to the original question, not sure what all they did to change the brake pad.

Might be more to it than that.

I had them check the steering head bearings over a year ago because of the wobble. Didn't help anything.
I never had wobble for the first 11k. That was with the OEM dunlops, then changed to the E3's. Bingo, had the wobble immeadiatly and the dealer could find nothing wrong. I don't take hands off the bars so it does not bother me. Just a pain in the a$$ to know that it is there.

+1
I know everyone knows this but why do we think it is a problem with the bike, it is the LAWS of Physics at work here folks, ALL motorcycles will demonstate some form of wobble, some at low speed(like the wing) some at high speed like the ones run on the salt flats, it is the relationship with the a rake and length of the bike and the two axels, Honda chose to design the wing with the low speed formula for safety, your hand on the bars act as the dampening force. remeber the old Super hawks had the knob on the triple tree you could tighten, that is what the ALL BALLS do, they do not FIX the problem they MASK it. NO I am not and engeineer or desiner but I have had several explian this to me over the years, take a rigid frame and rake it 6 degrees and extend the front end 12 inches NOW that's WOBBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JMHO and several others smarter than me.:doorag::popcorn:
Hmmmm. I 've noticed my wobble has become a little more severe over the last 5 or so thousands miles and my left brake pads are pretty worn. Hmmmmm. These are my third set of tires and never had a wobble before. Hmmmm.
Is your wobble more pronounced with a passenger aboard or just the same?
