I have an 06 and it's about time for me to install my gerbing permanent controller. I believe I may have to remove my top shelf (the part around the gas lid) and I'm not sure what else after that but my question is, how do you remove the top shelf? Is there a site somewhere that shows how?

It's a pain.. you have to start with the edge trim strips on either side of the fairing. I take that back.. Step one of ANY gold wing job is to remove the seat. Then the edge trim strips. This reveals the hex bolts that hold the edges of the top shelter on. Then remove the dashboard cover. Fred Harmon has a nice DVD set that shows how to do this in all in detail.....

Make sure that you have an ID system in mind to track the various sized bolts. In his video Fred recommended numbering the bolts. I think the rest is pretty straight forward. Where are you mounting the controller? You can fish thru the shelter without removing it. I ran from the battery to the left fairing pocket and didn't remove the shelter

I cant' find the link right now but do a search on "top shelter removal". Fredh has a web page that shows you step by step procedures on how to do this. Fred's a wealth of info. and probably a great guy too. I've never met the man but have learned a lot from his posts and the page mentioned above. :capwin:

Nice try Guy's, the 06 dash cover does NOT come off like 01-05! There are NO screws around the speakers or any where for that matter. You simply grab it at the end past the key & lift up ( it takes a littel tug ) once it's loose unplug the plug by the key( it catches opposite of the 01-05) & then pull it to you, then unplug the twetter wires & remove the cover.

Snap out the plastic ring around the key first before the guage panel can come off. Pull up aroud the key area first......just gromets there nad then up near the speakers.....more grommets.......and then the tweeter wires. Pretty easy. the topp shelter itself if like the 01-05's. You really should get yourself a 06 service manual for times like these. I just did mine last Sunday.....it was not too bad.....but I had the manual!

Also be careful with the trim strips that runs beside the fairling pockets that covers the shelter screws. Push one edge over toward the center of the strip and out a bit to get the clips loose onone side only.......don't start at the end......but in the middle......then it will become clearer. No tools requiired for the strips......fingers only!!
