tried to add key fob, now none work

I was following the "updated" add a key fob video, and I must have done something terribly wrong. I had the key fob light up when I was attempting to turn the bike on by the switch. I researched and decided to disconnect the battery for several minutes. After re-connecting the battery, I have nothing! It went from bad to worse. bike is now playing dead, key fobs affect nothing. Any help is much appreciated.

Do you have your emergency start code? You'll need the code from a fob that previously worked. If so, try turning the bike on using the emergency procedure then register the fob(s) from there. You may need your emergency metal key as well, depending on if your saddlebags are open or not.

Bought the bike with 2500 miles on it, and no emergency start code. I have left a voicemail with my salesman to try and get this from the fella that traded it in. Both key fobs worked until I tried to add a 3rd, it never got activated, and I made a serious u-turn somewhere. I can access the the saddle bags with metal key.

Bummer. You really need the code for one of the first two fobs. You can get it by contacting Honda customer service (be armed with your registration, bill of sale, receipts, and ID to prove you're legit). Do a search of these forums for more info.

This is the procedure in that case...

this is what I was in the process of doing when everything went South. fobs blink 3 times when trying to turn the ignition on. this lets me know that the bike is seeing the fob, but I get nothing on the dash whatsoever. I can push the "unlock" button on the fobs and I do get the lights to flash. everything( bags, trunk, and compartment) is unlocked as well (with fob on or off). I cannot go through the emergency start procedure (didn't work all the times I tried) since the compartment is unlocked.

Update: I have the code and have went through the emergency start sequence. The bike is seeing the fob’s as going through the sequence the lights are flashing on the fobs. Once the sequence is finished, I get a sick 3-4 beeps from the bike, but it will not come to life.

The timing between key presses is critical. I added a second fob to my 2018.

Then I went through this with a friends Goldwing. His original fob quit working, another friend of his gave him his extra one. It would never work. Then I found the blurb I told him to buy a new one. Once he received it, it too several tries to get it working following the procedure above. After I got it working, then I got his original fob working again as well. Also as menioned above, make sure that only the fob you are working with gets turned on or the procdure will not work. We finally removed all the other fobs from the area.

Nothing simple such as being in gear (neutral light?). Do the lights go out when you press the starter indicating a flat battery? Make sure the fob is close to the driver's seating position (it has to be closer than it does for opening the bags).

It's a DCT...I am lost....now the bags, trunk, and compartment open without a fob at all. still no power with, or without fob on. I do have it connected to battery tender as well. No power to the ignition, only get flashing lights from pushing the unlock button on the fob when it's turned on. Have checked all fuses except the big 40 amp.

I have read somewhere that you cannot register a Fob that has ever been registered to another bike. I don't know if that is true or not myself, but if you bought a 2nd hand fob, maybe this is the source of your nightmare?

2 of them I had connected without any issue until I tried connecting the third one. Why a third you ask? Because it was left in the bike, and I thought why would I have a third one and it not be connected to the bike. I should have left well enough alone.

@jhubble72, Normally my fob is in my pocket and doesn't see the light of day until I'm done riding and I take it out to put it away. Therefore I never notice if there is any indication on the fob when I approach or use any function that requires the fob. So, I just went out to the garage where the bike is with fob in hand and me paying attention to it to see if it does anything. Which by anything, I mean if the red light flashes in any way. Just walking up to the bike, it does nothing. Turning the ignition on or pressing any of the buttons to open a compartment causes a single flash on the fob.

I am curious what your fob does when you turn the ignition on or try to open a compartment. Do you get a flash on the fob? My guess is the bike sends a signal to the fob when an action is taken that requires the fob such as opening the trunk. The fob responds to the bike, likely with a code that tells the bike its okay to perform the action. The light on the fob is a visual indicator that it is responding. Then the bike performs the actual action. If your battery is bad, it may have enough juice to reconize the fob, but not enough to perform an actual function.

Interesting. I only get one. I still suspect your battery is bad. Or maybe your bike is somehow stuck in pairing mode if that's even possible. You did remove the jumper that you used when you tried to pair the new fob, correct?

When my '22 spare fob was not working it would flash the LED three times when I pressed the buttons (on the bike) to open the bags or trunk. After I re-registered the fob to the bike the LED flashes only once when pushing the bags and trunk open buttons. I just went out and checked. It also flashes the LED once when latching closed the bags or trunk.
But when it was not working it would not light up the ring on the ignition switch as yours does.

nothing to lose. tried that....now there is literally nothing. cannot make the lights flash when pushing the "unlock from a distance" button. Tried the emergency start process again after, to no avail.

I have made her a Dr. appointment, but will keep trying to diagnose and maybe I can cancel it. my hopes are diminishing though. I did have the service Manager try and save me the 2.5 hr trip, but to no avail.

Update: not a good time with this at all. Seems the 3rd fob was connected to a different bike. When I tried to pair it to my bike, it shut the SCU (thanks for the clarification Aussie Chris) down and rendered the steering lock, and both key fobs connected to the bike useless. Very costly repair! Have to replace the ECU, steering lock and both fobs. None covered by warranty.

***?!?! It bricked the ECU?!?! That makes no damn sense
It will be the SCU (Smart Control Unit) not the ECU that needs replacing along with the ESL (Electronic Steering Lock). They go together...

Very strange that trying to register a fob used on another bike would cause all that damage. It should have just refused that particular fob and left the other registrations alone.

I guess the lesson here is to only try to pair a FOB that you know for sure is brand new. The FOB should still be in the sealed parts bag with the code tags still attached as it comes from Honda
