Where did you purchase the shims? How do you know what thickness shims to buy? I have 181,000 mileson my 02 and have always checked my valve clearances. They have always been within spec until now. Although I have always done my own work I am a little confused about valve adjustments.

two needed shims
second valve adjustment
bike has 44,000 miles
I have shims left over from last time
they were ordered thru Honda

bike seems more responsive at low rpm
may be just my imagination

used Freds video for support
wore shoes

I have heard wearing shoes while doing maintenance procedures can slow you down. Something about dragging your feet.

I had to replace all my exhaust and some of the intake shims and I also noticed improved performance, I don't think it was your imagination.
I did't have the video, but I did wear shoes.

It's not your imagination. I know that after I wash my bike it runs better. :p
