Want to Learn Top Gun Motor Officer Skills?

If you enjoy watching the amazing skills of motor officers running a cone course, Top Gun or Moto Gymkhana, you might want to take the Basic Motor Officer Course at MotoMark1 in North Carolina.

This course is a full week plus night riding learning high speed, low speed, cornering, dealing with distractions, emergency braking and more. I have not taken the course yet, but I am planning to go to their open house on Saturday April 06, 2013. I hope to take their less extensive Precision Maneuvering School in 2013. If you are going to a MotoMark1 class or the open house, PM me--maybe we can get together.

I just got the okay from the boss to ride out to the open house on Saturday, April 6. :yes1:

$995.00 sounds a bit steep to have a chance to scratch your bike up.I do know a LEO that practices in his 2 car garage on an old Harley and its beat up pretty bad he is part of the DC motorcycle guard and does alot of Arlington honor rides as such.

Well, you are right: If you do this enough, you WILL drop your bike. But those case guards work very well. I saw guys drop their Wings at the RLAP course in Greensboro. No visible damage anywhere.

The only other place I know with a similar 40-hour motor officer course open to the public is the North West Motorcycle School. Their course is $800 on your bike and $1,100 on their KZ1000. A Wing won't fit on their range. One day at California Superbike School is $700 on their BMW race bikes. And MotorMark1 does offer a 1 day class for $300. So, compared to other schools, I'd say they are right in there.

All these classes are expensive compared to a tank full of gas and a few hours practicing in an empty parking lot. :roll:

I would love to have an advanced motor officer skill.

The skill to have inborn radar and a cloak of invisibility, so they could never give me a ticket. :lol:

I talked to a motor officer who routinely enters competitions and asked him how he kept from tearing up his guards. He stated they put radiator hose over them for practice runs. He also stated that nothing else is tough enough such as garden hoses, etc.

That cloak of invisibility is about as accurate now a days as the old wives tale about shaving more often makes your beard grow thicker ..

Even I can attest to that.. Montana State Po Po have a barney fife scam that goes like this. I found out the hard way that in Montana a single orange cone designates a construction zone which means the current speed for that section of highway is 35 mph, even if the the only posted sign states it is 65 or 70. 110.00 ticket. AND you can not contest it by just hiring a lawyer to enter your plea for a court date. You must make a minimum of two appearances, one to enter your request to contest it and then your court date. Bet that works really well keeping the traffic tickets from going to court

Mark Brown the owner of Motormark1 is a great guy and a top notch instructor. I did my Motor Officer training with him when he worked for the North Carolina Highway Patrol as thier lead instructor. You will not be disappointed with any of his courses i'm sure. Ride safe and practice often.

Old fire hose works great also.

Lol! Well a few of them do have a sense of humor. Might as well mess around a bit, it is cold and raining today, kinda stuck waiting for spring to sprung, it sure is taking its sweet time. May heat up the garage and tear an old stump grinder down and fix the carb on that. At least out of the rain........

No I am going to the Electrical Connection event in May. The worst trouble I can get into there is flirting with a Hooters girl, if I come to that speed rally and try to follow Yellow Wolf I may overload my skill set and end up as a statistic.

After last year I more or less gave it up, strange roads, and those who still act as teenagers I just grew up I suppose, decided I would rather live to ride again.

I remember having a conversation along these lines, will this kind of behavior cause many to give up the alternative option events? I think long term it will as most of us just want to ride, get out and go and be safe. We really have no desire to beat the other guy, just enjoy the day, the adventure and say Hi to old friends. To tour this nation while we still can.

I had a choice and I chose to go to the Electrical Conn event, and the attiude of the situations were a deciding factor. I do not wear a parachute on my tail, but really have no desire to act the fool on strange roads. Especially in a group ride. A few of those performance awards have worked I suppose in the gaining of common sense.

Each to their own, and the world goes on.

All of you stay safe and we will meet in life somewhere yet again. I have four years left to work, then I plan to wear out an GL1800 going all over this nation.

Traffic court is the MOST unfair single thing in our justice system.
First of all the judge is going to belief the officer 99% of the time, I have known a judge or two that will question the officer but that's very rare.
Secondly, compare the cost of the ticket to losing two days wages, in most cases cases the citation is just paid.

So even tho you know you are right it's back to the old adage....you can't beat city hall.

Here's another tipbit that will upset all the LEO's out there. Never under any circumstances or what the LEO tells you....DO NOT take a field sobriety test, do not do any road side tests, do not even attempt to say the alaphet backwards starting with m. Just "politly" tell the Officer if he want to transport you to the hospitial for a blood test you will go along, other than that you are only providing evidence for his case against you.

I learned this by putting 32 years on the street and just feel there is to much injustice in the system so maybe this will help a few.

I was lucky enough to take and 80 hour course years ago (and get paid for it). I would pay to do it again the skills I learned in the school no doubt saved my bacon (pun intended) a few times. Impressing your riding buddies with your skills is an added benefit.
The cost of the class is more than worth it and is better money spent than any protective gear you could buy. IMHO

Holding Motor Officer Certification as a civilian would be a nice feather in the cap.
Will be taking their class as soon as scheduling permits.

Now been doing public safety for over 36 years,, and as far as the DWI procedures go REFUSING a breath test in Maryland will get you an automatic license suspension now. I have reservations about how some of my fellow LEOs use there speed measuring devices to generate income versus safety enforcement, BUT that being said DWI enforcement is another thing entirely. If someone I strongly believe is trying to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of any drug or alcohol and they refuse the mandated breath test I always do the extra paperwork and save the video of the probable cause for the initial traffic stop to guarantee a conviction in court later.

I've already planted that seed and am just waiting for the right time for it to sprout up. Looks like the course is about 4 hours away from me, but with it being a week long it takes a bit of coordination with family and work. If you take the course, let me know your impressions of it please. I've almost got enough money saved in my bike fund that she doesn't ask about when I spend, but I can already tell finding the time to attend will be the harder hurdle to get over.
