If you check out the inside cover of the new Cycle World, you will see a 2-page spread for the 2014 Goldwing. It appears that this is the type of rider that Honda is targeting for Goldwing sales. To be honest, with all due respect, how many of us look like the couple in the ad?

The man is maybe 40 years old and the lady looks to be in her late 20s or early 30s. Do any of us on this forum look like this guy? OK, maybe one or two of us. Each of the models are probably 50 lbs lighter than the average Goldwing rider. And, he is too damn good looking if you ask me to be riding a Goldwing. If I looked like him, I would be riding a Ducati. Actually, I would be riding, well, never mind.

Apparently, this is Honda's target demographic for the 13 year-old Goldwing platform.

Perhaps that's the demographic that Honda is trying to attract? Let's face it, the average Goldwing rider is going the way of the dinosaur. If Honda doesn't attract a younger customer base for the Goldwing, it will go bye-bye too. It's all about business.

Honda' ad designers probably had more to do with that than anyone else. Advertising always promotes the young, the beautiful, the glamorous side of anything they are trying to sell. Advertising is all about trying to sell the product and has nothing to do with either the truth, or reality. Who in there right mind would ever approve an ad with a couple of grizzly old farts driving the bike when they could have a couple of glamorous young models instead? Look at cosmetic advertising; how else could a company sell 15 cents worth of smelly stuff for $40 or more, to gullible women would wish to look like the glamorous models in the ads.

The truth is those who will buy a Wing will do so anyway for all the reasons we know, regardless of the age demographics involved.

Look at any ad - do you actually think they will show someone is balding, overweight with a Dunlop around their middle (Dunlop over their belt), and having a co-rider that applied for Social InSecurity 5 years ago??

Even the Viagra/Cialis commercial shows a young 40's guy and girl fit from the gym workouts who really don't look like they need any "help".

It's an image thing - just like Harley's been selling for years. You want the old geezer's to mentally think they're just like the young dudes they see in the ad. Never mind they never did look like that, even 20-30 years ago. ;)

So just imagine you're like the guy in the ad - and enjoy the ride...

As much as you seem to be so unhappy with the Wing, perhaps you should purchase a BMW?

I still have all my hair, do not need blue pills, and the girls still think I am cute.

Now if looking at bikes and sales, I am naturally much more attracted to the young and sexy women, that is human nature.

It is all used to sell, not only bikes but any product.

My first Goldwing was in 2007 when I was 36. I also weighed about 200 pounds. I didn't look all that good, but I guess I would have fit the demographic in that ad :)

I agree. I seem to remember Honda using Nicky Haden to advertise the GL1800 way back in 2001.

Anyone remember Honda sending VHS tapes in the mail showing Nicky Haden showing off how sporty the 1800 is and all of its features...I must have watched that tape 50 times before I bought my 03. I have been a Wing fan since I was 16 when the GL1000 came out....and knew I would own a Wing one day, but I always thought I would be much older when I bought my first Wing...but when Honda sent me that VHS tape in the mail showing how sporty the GL1800 was, I just had to have one...I was 43 when I bought my GL1800

So the demo is a 40-ish guy chasing a much younger gal? Divorced guy? Or soon to be divorced if the younger gal is a girl friend ?

I don't know about that. It seems to me that the pool of aging riders ready to dial it back a notch and take on a more comfortable ride is still growing. And if our type were really going the way of the Dinosaur, Harley would be seeing the effects also, and I don't see that happening.
as far as attracting a younger customer base, isn't that what the 1800 was about?

Honda can market to whatever demographic they like, but the Goldwing had a stereotype hung on it years ago. No magazine ad is going to change that image.
Now if Honda really wants to target a younger audience, maybe they should hire somebody like Yellow Wolf to show what this Big barge is capable of! Besides, the young guys already have the hot chicks. They aren't going to buy into the marketing fantasy that a Goldwing is going to improve their chances!

The ad accomplishes two things.... First, to convince younger guys that they belong on a Gold wing.... Second, to convince older guys that if they ride a Goldwing they are bound to look just the guy in the ad, and will undoubtedly have young hotties clamoring to hop on their bike with them.

Seriously, how many Goldwings would they sell as a result of an add that actually showed "us"?

What might work though is to show a typical one of "us guys", with a considerably younger and seriously hot assumed partner looking extremely happy and "satisfied" riding comfortably on the pillion, hair blowing (from under proper helmet of course) in the gentle, barely disturbed draft of the stock windscreen.
