'Looking for a new radar detector.
It'd be great if it was waterproof, could show battery voltage, and had bluetooth to convey a 'hit' to my helmet speakers.
What brand and model do you prefer?

I use an Adaptive TPX radar detector on my 2015 wing and my 2007 ST. Mine is a version 2.0 and not the most current one that is shown here.

I have used their products since 2005 or so (I forget when I got the first one). I do not know if it has a method of interfacing with the 2018 wings bluetooth system. You could contact them and ask.

It is waterproof and provides ample warnings. The only problem with my unit is the false alarms due to collision avoidance systems on newer vehicles and Trucks. That may or may not have been addressed in the newest version.

The version 2.0 is my second one. I replaced my original one when I failed to slide it into its mount properly (I was in a hurry and only got one rail engaged) and it fell off the bike after about an hour of riding. I hit a bump in the road in a small town near where I live. The detector left the mount and dropped on the road and was promptly run over by a car which moved it to the center of the four lane road (turn lane) I stoped, picked it up and it rattled but still worked and works to this day in my car as needed. But I purchased a new one (2012 or so I forget) when they had a rebate sale going on.

The new power/com interface uses a pigtail so that probably can't happen again (failure to put it in its mount properly). But as you can see it is a very durable device.

I don't know of any other device that is designed for a motorcycle, with a motorcycle specific mount and is waterproof.

Just as a back up you can do a search using "motorcycle specific radar detectors" and see what detectors are identified .

I used to have an Escort. Did not use it frequently. One day I turned it on and it said "Needs calibration. Return to factory." so I did. Not 100% sure about the cost to re-calibrate but I think it was ~ $175 (maybe some one can correct me) and a couple of weeks time. A few months later I turned it on and it said "Needs calibration. Return to factory." so I threw it in the trash.



I bought a replacement at Costco for ~$70. The only feature I miss that the Escort had is the earphone out jack that I used to integrate the detector audio into the "system."


Not riding very fast these days so I can take or leave a detector.


So, I recommend against Escorts.

Bel RX 65 & Bel Pro 500 right now . . . One in the truck & I always have one on the bike! Works like a charm & has saved 100’s of tickets over the years! :grin2:

I personally don't know of a fully waterproof radar detector; many will use a RD in a dedicated container just to eliminate that issue.

Most common RD's will show battery voltage...

The RD audio output would drive a BT transmitter - or you could get an older RD (Escort Passport X70 radar detector and the Apple Bluetooth SmartCord Live...).


So, your last question? Dirt simple - Uniden R1 (doesn't have Bluetooth, GPS lockouts, and has the best range out there today...) in a hidden location on the bike.

I assume you are mounting it in the hidden box behind the headlight. What are you using so that you can either see or hear the radar going off?

My method and YMMV of course:

Very Important: Start my knowing what your speed "really" is. Use a GPS and go for a ride. Either get something like a Speed-O-Healer or do the math when you ride.

Plenty of folks going faster. In my experience they seem to provide any Leo's with more than enough business that they need not worry about me . . . and of even more importance, I need not worry about them.

I ran them all over my almost 40 years riding . I prefer Rocky Mountain Radar judge model . Scrambler option works very well . Plus they pay first year "if " ya get a ticket . I just did a cage run to Bowling Green,Ky in 27 hours 1480 miles road trip in 27 hours . That includes buying a bike , 1 hour supper with relitives , and 6 fuel stops . Do the math :wink2:

We DO drive pretty fast up here in Canada as a whole! :grin2: However, lots of those radar saves are actually down in your quadrant! The troopers have no time to even turn around in the twisties . . . hehe! Vroom vroom!! >

New Uniden R3 which has the GPS built in along with many other features. But I also don't run that fast anymore on the interstate but on two lane state roads it is nice out in the middle no where to run 65 which will get you a ticket here in the great state of Chicago
