2 months ago I purchased a new battery for my 07 (Shorai Lithium). Just recently I noticed that the bike was not starting when I engaged the clutch while the bike is in gear. Most of the time, while in the garage the bike is in neutral anyway. I figured this was a lithium battery issue - as it is getting colder. So when I would go to the garage, I turned the lights on (to "warm-up" the lithium battery) while putting on my gloves, helmet, etc. - and even after a few minutes, same thing - bike does not start with clutch engaged - but the instant I put it in neutral, it fires right up.
When I bought the bike (2007) one of the first add-on items was Kuryakyn ISO clamshell grips. I noticed after I installed, I had to fully pull back clutch to start - and sometimes had to be in neutral. Funny thing is, after a couple of months this problem went away. Now 6.5 years later, the problem has returned.
Went for a ride today - temp in the high 50's - and again it would not start until I was in neutral. Rode to town for lunch, came out, placed key in, waited 3 or 4 minutes - and it would not start-up. Put in neutral - fired up instantly. Rode 1/2 mile to fuel up - same thing. I was thinking the problem is the lithium battery having to be warm thing - when it dawned on me that I experienced the same problem 6.5 years ago. After a 3 hour ride, went to play pickleball for 1.5 hours. Temps had dropped to high 40's by this time. Got on the bike, placed in neutral, and instantly fired-up. Drove 1 mile, went to eat dinner, and after - placed in neutral, and again instantly fired-up.
What I'm trying to understand is why this problem - that went away for 6 years - has returned. Anyone else experience something like this? Thanks.
