I am thinking of activating an XM radio subscription and checking my options:
1. Should I use the SP 2820 feature or buy a new device?
2. What do I need in order to hook up the GPS? Is a GXM30 a must?
3. Will I need an antenna if I buy a regular plug & Play device?

Any advice will be appreciated.

If your owner's manual says you need a GXM30, then you do. I have one for my Zumo 550. Have the Zumo mounted on the left handlebar with a RAM mount on the clutch housing, and the GMX30 mounted on the right handle bar with a RAM mount on the brake/throttle housing. Works very well input through the AUX input under the left fairing pocket. If you go with a regular plug and play, you will still need a similar setup and an antenna, and the radio will not be waterproof. The Zumo will play music while I use all the other functions, and interrupt music for the routing commands, etc.

Yes, you have to have the GXM30 to get XM radio. The GXM30 is the XM radio and XM antenna, the 2820 just has the control software in it.
