In Illinois, the toll rate without a transponder isn't double, it's considered the "standard" toll fee. With an Ipass or EZ pass, you get half off. Such a deal!

And they too monitor license plates by camera especially those with no transponders. But I see more and more plates that are almost unreadable with paint flaking off or those cardboard temp plates that can be altered real easily. If plate can't be ready, they will never get charged...

I never have to deal with these toll roads out here in the southwest. I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit I’m not sure what to even do if I was ever to encounter one. Do you actually stop and pay somebody something like going through a McDs drive through?
Me too. We don’t have them in Oregon. When we went to RDL, we had the misfortune of driving on the crazy San Francisco highway. I remember 50 years ago it being two lanes on both sides. Now it’s about 12? Lanes both directions with a toll every few miles. I too thought I could just stop an pay. No chance. I lost count how many we went through, 6-8 maybe and just said the hell with it since it was 100% survival mode even in the slower lanes doing 70. Luckily, I had a hitch rack with a large bag on it that concealed my plate. Never got a ticket in the mail. I doubt I will ever return to California.

No offense to those that live there but what a shithole.
Well probably time to plan to move. If you live in the PDX area, you have less that 2 years until ODOT is sucking money out of your wallet. I live in central Oregon and avoid the Portland area at all costs.

I went to Florida about 6 years or so ago. Florida sent me a bill for the tolls. 3 or 4 were in the 4-5$ range. One was for $24.00. there was no way to contact them to ask about the highest toll. No info on the web site, absolutely nothing. That sucks.

Live in Portland? Just asking...

That's basically what I said. EZpass is about 1/2 of bill by plate. In PA you we have no toll takers so it's either EZpass or BBP.

What happens if you don't pay them? Lucky we don't have toll roads in Mn

Many of the toll based states have reciprocal agreements with each other that if you don't pay the tolling state - your license is suspended in your home state. I have 2 EZpass transponders - one for the SUV and one for the GoldWing. I can add my Kawasaki Vulcan license number to the motorcycle EZpass and I could just move it from one bike to the other if it was called for. But the odds of me getting on a toll road with the Vulcan is nil.

Right from the PA Turnpike website. Of course it your registration MAY be suspended and nothing about restitution.
From what I've read, the Turnpike is owed millions of $ in unpaid tolls.

"Effective January 2, 2023, under the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, if you have incurred four or more unpaid toll invoices, or have accumulated $250 or more in unpaid invoices and fees, regardless of the number of unpaid invoices, or defaulted in a payment plan for tolls and fees from the PA Turnpike Commission (PTC), your vehicle registration may be suspended"

Riding out to Montana a couple years ago taking I90, I encountered some tolls "booths" that had a gate that lifted once you paid the toll. At one, it wouldn't detect my EZ Pass and the gate would not lift. The booth had a slot for credit cards, Apple Pay, etc. I had to dismount and pay that way. Later, at another one of these, it wouldn't detect my EZ Pass. The gate would not lift. There was enough room for me to go around the gate and not pay the toll.

So far, they have not billed me!

The good news is we haven’t seen a toll road since Chicago area on day 1 of this trip. That was May 30 😁

Currently in Lake Havasu City and heading to the Grand Canyon tomorrow for two nights. Then down to Tucson to visit friends for a few days before heading eastward and home on June 30.

so far we’ve gone about 5000 miles. Roughly 3200 to go

It’s been fun 👍

Actually, In Illinois (I had 4 I-PASS) the actual fee is more than the standard I-PASS toll fee. Don't quote me on this, but when they instituted the I PASS, fees WITHOUT I PASS almost doubled.

HOWEVER, when I forgot to attach my 4th I-PASS to the Goldwing, since it and my Goldwing license plate was already registered on my I-PASS Account, they charged the standard I-PASS Rate of 75 cents (license plate reader), not the higher NO I-PASS Fee of $1.50 or so. I rarely take the tollway, so it's not NOT Exact, but pretty close to the actual numbers. IL clobbers the non I-PASS holders.

Things that make ya go Hmmmmm
