Hello, New to this Site have not needed any assistance in the last 35 years with figuring out my bike issues. Had a 86 Aspencade sold with 169,000 in 2007. bought a 2002 then. With 4000 miles.
Here's my problem,
Have a 2002 with 102,000 has the great F1 code 26 that has just happened, checked wires etc, replaced sensor, now needing ECU/M
question is does the ECU/m need to be programed?
I work with Caterpillar and anytime we replace an ECM we have to reprogram the ECM.
So if you buy a new one or a used one are they already programed to your bike?

Thanks for any help. First time the bike let me down on a trip.

It appears so. It is part # 38770-MCA-P00 It comes up on various online part places as well as eBay. There is a brand new one on eBay for $699 right now.

And you don't necessarily have to program it, but what you do have to do is what is known as a recalibration. Start up with a cold engine and let it warm up to normal temperature. You will know because the fans will cycle on. Wait about 90 seconds for the fans to go off. But if after waiting 90 seconds, fans continue to run, just turn the ignition of anyway. That's all that is needed.

When mine got the F1 red light it would vary between code 25 and 26 , so I replaced both knock sensors the codes disappeared and never came back.
Many folks were originally saying it was a ECM failure but I have spare ECM and tried that first but nothing changed until I installed both new knock sensors.
