In the market for a new helmet. My question...Who makes a helmet comfortable for warm weather riding (currently I use a half helmet) and don't want to feel claustrophobic, I would like it with internal speakers/ boom mic, with an internal visor and sun visor (I'm light sensitive and can use the most blockage of the sky as possible) ...is there such a thing? Thanks for your input.

Helmets

I'd start by visiting shops that carry a food variety of helmets and/or checking out Revzilla's reviews, which are extensive on type of head shape,, ventilation, features (like internal visor). There's a lot of variety for sure. I personally stick with Snell approval.

I wear a Nolan 104 and I'm not uncomfortable helmet wise at any temperature. I have ridden in excess of 100 degrees with no discomfort from the helmet. It has all you are looking for but I have no idea if it will fit your head or not. Not everybody can wear every helmet.

I switched to modular helmets years ago. I tried them on in a store once and really felt the clutches of claustrophobia when I couldn't figure out the unfamiliar release mechanism. In spite of that incident, I switched and within a day or two the feeling was gone. It just takes a little getting used to, now I feel naked if I'm not fully wrapped. I crashed once and while sliding face-down through gravel I actually had the thought go through my mind, "I'm glad I have a full-face helmet on". Don't give up on a full cover helmet just because of that initial claustrophobic feeling.

Ride in all temps. like open faced full Shoei, on my 3rd Shoei, new is lighter with vents, installed headset and boom, brim visor and wrap around prescription sunglasses. Look over Windbender faring. Have 'floaters' and can't look thru a lot of plastic anymore. Have used full face and felt sealed up in a spacesuit!
Have always use silver or white/off white for heat. Would feel too unprotected in a half/three quarter/shorty.

I have a Fulmer modular helmet that is quiet and fits good but the ventilation sucks... So, during hot weather in Arizona I usually will switch to my GMAX open face with face shield and drop down dark shield. Much better.

Windscreen factor

I've been happy with my HJC modular but like any helmet the windshield you have on your '01' is a MAJOR element that is in play when the hot weather hits. I've never had anything other than the non-vented OEM shield on my '03' and know the dead air space behind the shield does not allow cooling air to reach me. It's only when I lower the windshield to the bottom click and am moving at a pretty good speed I get air moving through the helmet. Even when I wear my 3/4 ARAI in the summer heat (without the ear pieces inserted) it's the height of the windshield that dictates how much cooling air hits my face. I'm comfortable if my helmet fits me properly then air flow can be adjusted be it by the vent openings on the helmet or windscreen height.

I just bought a new HJC IS MAX II modular. this is my 1st venture into the modular world. I have worn 3/4 for years. So far this is a very comfortable, quiet and very well ventilated helmet. It is not hot enough to really tell-yet, but on the last 70 degree day, i felt lots of air flow with the vents open.

Are there any crash stats on helmet damage location percentages, specific to a Wing? The helmet crash stats I have seen in the past have quite a bit of damage percentage located on the chin bar. I still have my own teeth and would like to keep the for as long as I can. Although I am assuming the stats were for all motorcycles in the study and not Wing specific. Still I cant help think that open face helmets are missing a big piece of crash protection. Comfort aside, sweat washes off, skin graphs don't. - So for the wife and I we wear modular helmets.

Plus 1 for the Nolan 104 I wear mine summer and winter.

I used this HJC for many, many miles and highly recommend it for hot weather, IF, you want the full coverage. I live in Florida, and my long trips always include at least a full day of riding in high heat and humidity. It will handle your speakers and mic. I love this helmet, but at 95+ degrees and 99% humidity, just about anything is hot. The HJC is a heck of a lot cooler than my fullface Shoei.

Recently, I found a Bell Mag-9 Sena, on a great sale. It has a dropdown tinted shield, and as well as a clear shield, and a visor. What's nice, is that it is so small and light. It has accommodations for speakers and mic. Wearing a regular helmet, after wearing this, feels really confining, and huge! I wear ear plugs, so the downside doesn't matter so much for me, and that is that it is quite noisy. Wind noise bothers me, so I wear ear plugs no matter what helmet I wear. I really like this thing. It's certainly different, but it is very comfortable.

BTW, I have tried on the Nolan104 others are talking about, and it feels like a great helmet. I didn't buy it, just because of cost, at the time. I think it would probably be a good choice as well.

I wish I could trade in all of my helmets, or something. I have a ridiculous number of them, that are hardly worn. I guess I'm always looking for something better. The HJC is the only one that has been just about worn out. I guess that says something.

Personally, HJC helmets have been my best fit/comfort for the past several years. I mostly ride with a model CL-21M "half" helmet. It has a let more shape to it than a cheap "beannie" style helmet. It comes with a zip out storm curtain, I believe is what it is called, that will accommodate speakers, however I have never been fully pleased with the placement of the speakers to achieve the best sound. What has been working for me is using the Edsets system. Their module mounts to the side of the helmet with a choice of boom microphones and a standard stereo jack for plugging in a set of quality in the ear type speakers, the same type you would use with a MP3 or other music player.

I can relate to your concerns about claustrophobia. I spent a month last year reviewing helmets and visiting bike shops to try them out. The bike shop selection was limited and I ended up ordering a helmet from Revzilla.com Their videos and reviews were very helpful and their return policy is excellent. I bought a Nolen 104 Helmet and love it. Yes it is full coverage but it is light weight, comfortable, has good airflow and plenty of face protection. I was able to install an Edsets helmet headset with large speakers and a boom microphone and it was still comfortable. I wore this helmet everyday for 3 weeks on a 7000 mile trip across the U.S. (my 1st) with max temperatures of 114 degrees F in the desert and 40 degrees F at night in the rain. I can't complain. I got used to the full coverage helmet and now wouldn't give it up. My like the extra protection for my face.

Helmet

Just went through this last year. !st things 1st. You have to figure out your head shape. (oval, long or short, round etc.. Next I recommend calling revzilla.com gear geeks and asking for brands that fit your head shape and tell them what you are looking for in a helmet. Next step is: go to a local shop, try a few (as many as it takes to find the right fit) until you find THE ONE. Now all you need is your checkbook and off you go. I ended up with Shoei RF1200 because of the airflow. I would have gotten Arai Corsair but couldnt get past the $700+ price tag.

Good Luck Hope this helps

Full face or modular. I have been HOTTER in a 3/4 helmet than in my modular helmet!! Sounds strange, but it happened.
That is not surprising. Most people's first reaction to heat is to uncover, but it's the wrong reaction. If you've read all the conversation on this forum about LDComfort base layers, you will have gotten an education on keeping cool. Ever notice that desert dwelling people always cover up?

In a helmet, the less coverage, the more hot air over your neck face. I always wore a full-face helmet for greater crash protection, but it also protected me better in the heat. When it got seriously hot, an LDComfort helmet liner, soaked in water, could nearly give you a brain freeze!
