How do you check? Do you screw the dip stick in fully or just place it on top of filler neck? I 'm curious!

First, get out the owners manual. Turn to page 156. Read this:

Then read the rest of the manual. It covers the motorcycle you are operating.

Edit: Please excuse me. I did not see until now that you were a charter member of the GWRRA North 'Bama Road Riders...and a triker...

How do you check the oil?? This things got oil in it??? It's so high tech compared to my old bike, I thought it used some sort of space aged lubricant that lasted the life of the bike:oops: I guess I better go check mine too. Where did I put that darn crush washer?:joke:

Darn thing....

Shucks paw, i thought you had to drain it, measure it and then pour in new oil. I thought that stick on the end of that there oil screw plug was to puncture that seal on them new oil cans. Sha.zam...learned me something new.:shock:

Must be a Louisiana thing. I put 110,000 miles on my 95 wing and have 114,000 on my 03 and have never checked the oil....

If and when I check it between oil changes , which is rare. I do it early of a morning, bike is sitting on the center stand, loosen the fill cap, wipe off the dip tube, sit the tube on the fill hole, do not screw it in, rotate it backwards a time or so to coat the dip tube, see what it says and button it up.

Unless I see a leak or something, it is very rare that I even look at it between oil changes.

It is! It is! Even though I don't even have 6,000 miles, I've never checked the earl...:joke:

The key....

"6. Insert the oil filler cap/dipstick until it seats, but don't screw it in."

Had the wing in at the stealer because of rough running problem...turned out to be ECM related.

BUT, in the "expert" tech's once over of the bike, he explained that he had to remove almost a litre (quart for my south o' the 49th parallel friends) of engine oil because it was overfilled.

Got home, checked the oil...low... So was dipstick not seated and tipped downward, screwed in, or masquerading as a Goldwing tech?

And I should expect them to handle "real" problems...I think not.

And, that ended my decision on the $1800 CAD 4 year warranty extension...That's fine, I will keep the money and do what I can myself. At lease *I* can check oil properly.

Idiot.

No man, you have described an oil change. To check it you drain it, measure it, and pour the same oil back in.

I checked my oil level at the 4k point on an 8k change interval this past period. The oil was still at the perfect level, and still maintained a semi-clear reddish color on the Honda full-synth. At the 8k change interval, the oil was still at the correct level, but had turned completely dark.

Unless I spot any leakage around an engine seal, I'll not check it again in-between changes, but will continue changing it at 8k sharp with full-synth... all warm & fuzzy.

Take off the starboard side panel behind the engine.

Unscrew the dipstick dipstick.

Lay the bike on its right side.

If oil comes out, it has oil in it.

If not, put a little in.

Then screw the dipstick dipstick.

Repeat once in a while.

Next question?

Next week's "Question of the Week" will be
Do you fasten your helmet before mounting your bike, or After??
Always before. Never know when, as you get on the bike, you may fall down. Oh, wait - thats for Harleys at the local biker bar. Never mind......

Huh....and I was thinkin that it was for guys that can't hold up a two wheeler anymore!
Well, now that it is a trike, and no sidestand, when we check the oil we let all the air out of the left rear tire to get the correct lean.......thats why we don't bother to check it. Too hard to get the same air back into the tire......

HD would have introduced a recalibrated dipstick, to account for the reduction in parked lean angle.

Of course, it would cost $59.99, and would require a dealer to install.

And what is worse? Throw some chrome on it, and there would be guys buy the damned thing!!
