How much weight on luggage rack?

I noticed a sticker on inside of trunk that says 20lb max weight. Does that number include the weight on luggage rack? I have a large rack bag (Saddleman) that probably weighs 20 lbs when packed with clothes. I also have another 10 -15 lbs of weight inside trunk. Do I have too much weight sitting on the trunk lid?

The more weight you put on the rack, the more the lid will push down, causing the "plastic rub"!!!!
I suggest buying the truck lid supports if you plan on the max weight!

Yes ... the 20 lb limit is total weight. That's probably why Honda's luggage rack will not fit with a spoiler. Having both and carrying the weight of a down pillow is to much.

If the luggage rack is going to be used, do like others have suggested and get the WingRider trunk support system. It helps support the weight of the trunk lid and a passenger leaning back on it.

Just an FYI ... WingRider will not work with some under-lid organizers and some outer trunk chrome lighting strips.

Don't shoot the messenger, but if you do, please aim with care at the heart.

Male 6' 3" 176 - 216 lbs. Female 6' 3" 158 - 193 lbs.

So, if I dropped 40# I would be both skinny as a rail and obese

To see the whole chard just google "height weight ratio".

PG...thanks for the chart info. Looks like I better start eating :chicken: so I can put on a few pounds just to get to the low side of where I belong.

The good news is that our Wings can carry 405 total pounds of total payload. So if you weigh 210, that means you can gain another 195lbs before part of your leg has to be carried on a trailer

It's just simple math.

Luggage Rack Loading

Have regularly carried 15+ pounds on the Kury luggage rack, plus on occasion, stuff bungee-netted to the bag. After 5 years no cracks or other signs of stress have developed. I attribute this to two things mainly: the inner weather seal strip (hollow) has been filled with a solid rubber bead (screen window seal) for the full length. This absorbs a fair amount of the loading. Secondly, I have added Teflon tape to the trunk lid and trunk base contact points. Another thing is that I never allow the lid to slam down on the locks when under load - carefully let it down.

This has worked on 2 2008 Wings.

Yes 20 lbs minus the weight of the rack itself. probably about 10 to 15 lbs would be max. Its really for show and it wears out your lid early.

Min. weight at all cost ! I only got the confidence to add a rack on trunk, after the "wingrider bracket" was available. Use with the combination of wide star washers and wide support topside washers! Teflon tape on side where lid rubs. Heavy kury rack, and limit the bag to simple, water, lunch, camera, and rain gear for quick access. Also have spoiler mounted. Not a long mile hauler, but no issues for five years easy. Never add more to trunk then extra gloves, pocketbook/purse from other halve, and small items. Usually leave almost mt for small items purchased at stops.

By putting 20 lbs of gear on top of the rack, you might be looking at far more problems than just chafed trunk lining. When you open the lid, you are putting a heck of a lot of pressure on the hinges. I have noticed even with 8 pounds that I have to be very careful with the lid open. That trunk base flexes pretty bad.

I have read about a couple of riders that have snapped their hinges, and I suspect it was from carrying too much weight on top.

This is the first time I heard about this. I have heard about the Buggy Bumpers and they are a lot less expensive. Why would one use the Support System from WingRider?
From what I have seen, it is a pretty well engineered setup and spreads the weight out instead of forcing the lip to handle it. Not for everyone. It's for people who don't like to do things halfass. Every trunk is slightly different, and you can't even close some trunks with the RBBB setup. And the trunk can be difficult to open due to the pressure.

I was actually going to buy the WingRider setup, but was disappointed that you could not just order it from his site. You had to send an email to request it. I didn't have time to play email tag, so I came up with my own solution instead.

With this system, the trunk lid is mostly support with the brackets (http://wingriderproducts.com/images/100_1109.JPG) at the rear of the lid . If you look when your trunk lid is closed and press down on it, you'll see how gap between the lid and trunk can get down to practically nothing. With the brackets, instead of the top of the trunk supporting the weight, the brackets transfer the weight to the bottom of the trunk resulting in better supporting of the weight and no chaffing of the lid and trunk. Plus it will allow a little more weight. When we are on a rode trip, I put our rain gear and chaps in soft-sided nylon luggage bag and a "spider-web-bungle" to hold it on the rack and that makes a quicker to get on the rain gear.

Ed where did you get your teflon tape? I have used the soft side of velcro and it has been good so far. As for us we regularly have approx 20lbs on our rack with no problems.I also have the star washers under the rack legs to help distribute the weight.

There are various ways to reinforce the trunk lid. That said, you still do not want heavy stuff up high, it makes the hondapotomous harder to handle.

My opinion is - nothing goes on the trunk except for the spoiler/brake light... my second Gold Wing I put a rack on it and over the years that I had it - it started cracking. So the 1994, 2002 and my current 2008 - no rack - no extra weight - that is what I pull a trailer for.

I am not a big fan of luggage racks either, but the 1800 does not have the history of cracked trunk lids that previous models had. That does not mean they can't crack, but it has been proven that it is far more resistant to cracks. Most of the warnings that we see here are carryover experiences from riders who had owned previous models. (I know the 1500 had big problems with cracked trunk lids.)

For a lot of people a trailer is not an option, for a number of reasons. Some just don't want a trailer behind them. It's like having a ball and chain attached to your ankles. For others, the cost is something they aren't willing to stomach. Some have no place to store it. And from a common sense standpoint, it just doesn't make sense to attach a 200 lb trailer to their bike just to carry a 20 lb overflow of luggage.

We have a lot of choices for doing a lot of things with this bike. Many times those choices boil done to whichever one is the lesser of two evils. This is one of those choices.

I've had a Kuryakyn rack on my 2007 for 4 1/2 years and 43K miles later, no cracking. To distribute the weight, I use the Star washers on top and underneath the lid. A trailer is not an option for me. However, I've installed a vertical hitch for a 15" x 22" rack to pack a few extra items when do a long rode trip instead putting them on the trunk rack.

Telfon Tape

I got the Teflon Tape from Uline. Ordered online. The roll is 3/4" X 50 ft. (as I recall). This will give you supply for about 3 lifetimes.
