If you are looking for a sight seeing trip you should take hwy 191north thru the Grand Tetons, then thru Yellowstone and pick up hwy 89 north to Great Falls ( have stayed there twice, nice place) then you can continue on hwy 89 north to Browning and the East Entrance to Glacier,s Going to the Sun Road. The views are better going east to west and you are away from the edge and the drop offs. This will take you into Whitefish

Hello,
Last summer some friends and I made a cross country trip from NJ and part of the trip was on Rt 89 from Glacier National Park to Jackson Hole Wy. This was by far one of the nicest and most fun roads on the trip. Scenery was great and riding was very enjoyable. Have a safe trip and enjoy this wonderful part of the country.

When you leave Yellowstone, best early morning, I'd recommend going out the NE entrance to Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana. This is the beginning of the Beartooth Highway, US 212. At that T junction past Cooke City go south over Dead Indian Pass and have lunch in Cody, Wyo. There's a great museum at Cody with western art as well as antique firearms. Then head pack up to US 212 the way you came down, turn right and go over Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge, Montana.....maybe make reservations to stay in Red Lodge that night, nice town. Out of Red Lodge head toward Absarokee (ab-ZOR-kee) and from there you can choose to stay on the backroads or slab it to Missoula, depending on your time. You ought to stay in Missoula, very cool town. From Missoula head east on 200 toward Clearwater Junction where you pick up 83 to Seeley Lake and eventually work your way up to Whitefish.

Do this, you won't regret 1 mile.

When you get to Missoula go north out of Missoula to Flat Head Lake. Go around the lake on the East side of the lake. At Big Fork a little town on the east side they have plays every night. You don't want to pass them up, they are very good. You are only about 30 to 40 miles from Whitefish.

wyobigk...great recommendation on heading up 93 to Polson and then the east side of Flathead Lake to Bigfork. But I've also heard that construction on 93 is expected to be a mess north of Missoula (it's a mess even when there's no construction)...thus the reason for suggestion to go up through Seeley Lake instead. He could still catch Bigfork pretty easy that way if he wanted to. Maybe get one of those cabins overlooking the lake to the west and toast a Montana sunset one evening. Man I miss that country....

wyobigk...will be through your neck of the woods next month. I want to come in to Wyoming through the area where Encampment is and work my way toward that canyon north of Riverton on my way to Missoula. I was through there last year and really enjoyed the roads, the scenery and almost total lack of traffic. Met some interesting folks in downtown Meeteetse....bet there still there.

+1 on Avoiding Kansas and Nebraska. I was never so happy in my life the middle of Sept. last year heading home from a tour when I finally got out of Kansas. It was hot and nothing but harvested farm fields as flat as a desk top.

Never again for me. I'll go North to go East next time.

dresser 98... On the west side of Glacier there is a little general store out in the middle of no ,where that has the best bear claws you ever eat. I can't remenber the name of the place, but ask any one in the shops at West Glacier and they will tell you about it. The road was a little rough getting there but it was fun and worth the ride. I was there 3 years ago.
