Kuryakyn ISO grips question

Hello,

(I tried to use the forum search feature with no luck).

I would like to get the ISO grips for my 2012 but have a few questions.

How well does the grip heat come through the ISO grips?
Do they relieve hand cramps?
Would you recommend the throttle boss?

Finally, I have seen on the internet black ISO grips that supposedly fit the GL1800. Has anyone order these? Are they for real? I like the look of black better than chrome.

Thank you,
Fred

iso grips

I'm interested also. I understand that the ISO grips for the 2012 heated grips are larger than the old style for unheated grips since they are installed over the existing grips.
I think I'll wait until Americade and see just how much larger they are. I had the original ISO grips on my 2004 and loved them. Just the right diameter, but if the new ones are much larger I may have to reconsider.
And yes, they also come in black.

Outstanding. I so want those black ones. The price on the Kuryakyn website is too high for me right now.

I didn't even think about these might be a bit bigger round because they go over the stock grips. I got long fingers anyway.

Now I have to figure out what risers to get (Kuryakyn or BLM).

I had the iso on my old 1800 but with the heated grips I opted to go with the black foam slip-overs from wingstuff, and more than happy with them, heat comes through like OEM, and they are the perfect size and feel good all for $12.00 from grab-on

Niehaus had them on a bike sitting on the show room floor. I tried them for fitment and thought they would cause my hands to cramp. Especially if I were to use my Gerbing gloves. I think if you have large hands it would probably be OK. I also liked the black grips.
Like Wingmaster12 I also opted for the foam grip covers.

just installed the iso's on my 12 two weeks ago. i love them. they are big, but that is what i am use to anyway. the heat comes through ok. you have to use about 1 setting higher than without them. it takes a while for them to heat because of the extra rubber and metal. i should of bought the black but didnt see them listed. as for the risers, i installed the kuryakyn risers and they make a huge difference. i am short and the bars always seemed just a little to far forward. not no more, very comfortable.

:agree: I love my ISO grips too. I found the stock grips were a little small and so hurt my hands. These grips have given me no problems and had them installed for about 6 months. Wish I had seen the black ones first though as I too would have prefered them. Heat seemed to come through just fine for me.

I also love my ISO grips. BUT-----they don't work well with heat. I installed the kuryakyn ISO's especially for heated grips and there is little or no heat that gets through. I live in south Tejas, so cold weather is not really a problem. But if you're up north, in cold weather and have heated grips, don't buy the ISO's.

Well, I changed my mind. I ordered the chrome grips because I wanted to the contoured throttle boss and it only came in chrome. I figured the chrome throttle boss would look stupid with the black grips.

I also ordered the BLM risers. I liked the BLMs because they do not rotate the bars closer together. I often fined that I ride with my hands way out on the ends of the grips.

As for the bar end weights, I REALLY thought about them until I read on here that they were breaking off. I think it was something about the screws not being long enough or not beefy enough.

So, hopefully in a few days I will have my new stuff. Being a new Goldwing rider, now the apprehension starts about taking the front of the bike apart to get the risers put in.

How did the grips, throttle boss and BLM risers work out for you ? I would like to do the same..

I added the black Kurykyn ISO grips for heated grips. Works much better than the small diameter hard stock grips. Not cold enough to use heat yet. Did not add the throttle boss. Using the kuryakyn bar risers to move each one in 1 inch. Much better on my right shoulder.

Although the bike was brand new I think this setup made it a new bike all over again. The throttle boss is a little weird because it is like you don't even notice it there but you will naturally use it. I have had a few occasions to catch the sleeve cuff of my jacket on there. But then again if I would tighten the velcro I am not sure that will happen.

I got the wide grip BLM risers and really like them. Tight slow turns does bring the handle pretty far back and makes it feel a little un-orthodox but otherwise very very nice.

Although these go over the stock heated grips, the heat still seemed very sufficient at all settings.

Installation of the grips: Read the instructions. Make sure you have then aligned the same on both sides. The instructions recommend using zip ties to help put it on. DO IT. I used several zip ties and pliers to pull them up tight.

I took my first 4 hour ride last week since I got them and now that I come to think about it no pain in the hands, neck or shoulders. Other than the monkey butt nothing to complain about.

Personnel preference here; I should have stuck with the idea of getting the black ones. I am not a big fan of chrome. I am not a flashy type of guy.

Personnel info: I am 5'9" with 32" inseam and I wear xlarge gloves (size 11-12).

I appreciate your detailed reply , now I have an idea of what to look for ........
Thanks

Don't think the black is avail for the 2012 but then I am usually wrong.

I have the black clam shells on my black '12...and they look and feel great. The size takes about 10 minutes to get used to...then all is normal.
As for the heat coming through...huge difference...but I won't be able to say for sure until it's in the 40s outside.
It takes some sweat to get the tabs to seat and get them fitted...a huge tip for all listeners...I have been an avid bicycle rider for years...and a pretty good bike mechanic...when you go to put the clam shells on, spray your factory rubber grips with the cheapest stickiest hair spray you can find which is usually Aqua Net...you would not believe the assistance you will get from the hair spray in having your grips stay put for life.

I too have the BLACK Kuryakyn grips on my RED '12. Started with the chrome ones but as soon as I saw the black, I knew I had to swap. Had them about 8 months now so tried them in the cooler weather and they seem fine. 100X better for hand cramps than the stock grips but I did not bother with the throttle boss. Did not see a lot of point with a cruise control as well? Another tip I would give anyone trying to install these is to have a few large ZIP ties available. Make fitting so much easier and quicker.

Got them on mine, rode from ohio to florida with stock grips, what a pain.put the iso's and rode home to texas, what a difference! Put on the palm rest to,love it.noticed the heat after i installled them took a higher setting to feel it but after a while turned it down.

I had the large HD chrome and black grips on my softail, and I was instantly looking for larger grips when I traded my HD for my new 10 GW last fall.

People here talked me into trying the foam grips and a large cramp buster.

This set up works very well, looks great and very stock, being all black. The heat flows nicely through the foam, and comes in at a very reasonable cost.

The only grips I saw for the 2012 were the clamshell style, as they have to fit OVER the factory heated grips. It also appeared they were only available in chrome?

I have seen the black Iso Grips, but from what I found on Kury's website, they aren't available for the wing.....did I miss something? I'd like to get black ones, if they are available for the 2012 w/heated grips.

Nevermind....found it.

Part# for the BLACK grips is 6383

ISO Grips

I had the ISO clam grips installed in November at the Lone Star Rally and love them. The cramps in my hands went away. I also installed the throttle boss and weights. I've been very pleased. I have not had any issue with the heated grips...there is plenty of heat.

Those foam things turn slippery and hard over time. I guess not a big deal to replace them every couple years though. Don't see the benefit personally. $99 for those Kuryakyn Chinese grips??? Whole lot better than Honda there for sure. Look great too. Well sarcastic remark. You guys don't mind those fugly things on your beautiful 2012?

I ordered the black iso clamshell grips, the black contoured throttle boss, the black grip end wieght, and the red accent smooth trim rings. Think this combo will good on my red 2012. Will post picture when I get them installed.
