Molinex Connectors - Tool Required?

I'm trying to install a "flasher" circuit for my headlights on the 2001 GL-1800. Using the Honda Manual, it says to remove the instrument grill first. All fine until I try and disconnect the 4-plex molenix connector that hooks up the three display buttons above the ignition switch. Until you can disconnect the plug, you can't lift the grill off or even up very high (if you have big hands, you have enough room to slide your hand under there but that's about it). I can't get the molinex to unplug - it is the type of molinex that requires that you depress two small "buttons" on either side of the connector to unlock the connector. Is there a tool to do this? Is there an easy way to do this? Is there a better way to access the back of the headlights to plug in the flasher circuit?

Appreciate the help.

I use a long skinny flat blade screwdriver. Looking from the right side you can see the tab that needs to be 'lifted' to release the plug. At the same time you're lifting the tab pull the wires towards the right side... it will come loose and you can release the grill. Use a flashlight to help see the tab.

Dale,

Welcome to the board with your first post!

Ray gave you the correct procedure for disconnecting that connector. One additional thing to consider, is that some of us on this board have then filed the little tab that the connector is stubbornly locked to. When further maintenance activity is needed in the future, the connector can just be gently pulled off. I have not ever had it come loose on its own. The friction of the connector housing and the pins keep it in place just fine.

YMMV.

Dale,

Unless your hands are very small, you will have a time removing and replacing the headlight plugs from inside the right and left storage compartments (storage bins removed). I chose to remove the inside faring panels that will allow access from the underside on either side of the front tire. You have to remove a few screws and push pins to get the panels out. You can then reach up behind each headlight and remove the plugs without any problems.
