Just bought new helmets and new J&M headsets and can't seem to get either headset to work. It has to be something i'm doing or not doing cause I can't belive they both don't work. The headsets are model HS-8154 and they came with the 5-pin cord. Plugged into the connector on the bike and turning the radio on and then pushing the radio button again displays the headphones icon the sound should be in the helmet right? I get no sound in the helmet with any option, radio, CD, CB, or intercom. What am I missing?? Does the bike have to be running cause i'm trying this with the key in the ACC position.

After pushing the headsets, intercom button push volume button twice to display intercom volume.Try this I had same issue first time I installed and tested mine. Felt like a dummy after i was shown.Good luck
When I push my volume buttom twice it shows AVC for the intercom and my only choices are HI-MED-LO.
Should'nt I be able to hear the radio through the headsets? I got nothing just dead silence. The headsets say they are compatible with the Honda system and they are both new in sealed boxes, there has to be something i'm missing???

The first push should bring up intercom volume, second push is intercom mute, and third push is AVR. It really sounds like the headset connector going into the audio unit is not snapped into place. This is a very common problem when an air filter is changed.
If this connector was unplugged would that kill the back plug as well? I have nothing at either plug.

Yes, the headsets go into this plug separately but are both on the same side of the connector.
Just ride it up here and I will check it out.
Thanks thats incredibly nice of you to offer that! If I can't get it figured out and we get some warmer weather i'll be seeing you. I have been told that I bought junk headsets anyway and even if I get them working they are no good. I quess I figure that out in time??

The headsets are not junk, just low end old technology, same as Honda is selling today. I have customers with the same mike and speakers that were purchased over 20 years and have lasted on 4 or 5 bikes. The biggest problem with what you purchased are the cords and they have a 2 year warranty and only cost $20.

Thanks Wayne! I feel a little better now about my purchase. I did not buy the high end stuff cause I never had a bike with a intercom/radio before and don't know if we will even like the headsets but we needed new helmets and I got a deal for the headsets with the helmets through my dealer. I just could'nt justify paying for high end headsets what the helmets cost. Anyway thanks for your advice and the offer to look at my bike!!

sounds like u are pressing the wrong button, u need to press the square upper left AUDIO button (it has picture of speaker and headset just above) not the round vulume button, the square button turns the radio on-off and selects headset or speaker

when u press the square button that turns the radio on you should see either a headset on the screen or a speaker, if it shows a speaker it will play through the bikes built in speaker system, if it shows headsets it will play through the headsets

the intercom is a whole different story, i would suggest you simply get playing the radio figured out first, after that worry about the intercom

owners manual does a pretty good job of explaining it

I figured out to switch the radio to the headsets (shows headphones icon) but no sound? Intercom is the same way and so is the CD player.

Have to ask since I didn't see any reference in your posts.. Do you get sound from your speakers? You also mention the cb and cd player do you have these installed? They don't come with the bike. also what is your volume set at?
Yes I have the CD player and the CB. Normally I run my radio volume at 12 and have never been able to use the CB because we never had headsets till now, but we could listen to it just not talk to people.

I had the same thing on mine and it turned out the radio was fried. Everything worked perfectly except dead silence when trying to use headsets.

I had to replace the radio in mine to get it working.

This headache you are experiencing will be worth it. Just installed the low end J&M's in wife and my helmet. Listening to music in the headsets, talking to the wife driving down the road is cool.
The problem does sound like a possible wiring issue. It is not rocket science with buttons. If no sound comes out headsets 1. the headset icon is on the The radio is on turned on FM volume turned up to 15. 2 press the mute button a couple of times to be sure it is not in mute mode. I am assuming your normal speakers are not a problem.

There is a resistor, capacitor, transistor or something inside the Goldwing radio which powers the headset line that can be replaced if it is bad. I've heard it gets damaged by incorrectly disconnecting the battery which causes a spark. Negative battery cable should be removed first and installed last. Not necessary to buy a new radio. My local Honda dealer sends radios to Panasonic for a flat rate low fee. The radio must be removed by the owner or the shop charges a hefty fee to do it. If your wire connections are good, ask you dealer about the Panasonic repair.

Larry M on this board may be able to fix this, as well.

I sure hope the radio is not bad? I'm going to go into it tonight and see if something is unplugged somewhere. I bought the Wing used and had no way to test the headsets but did make sure the radio worked. We will see and i'll keep you up dated as to what I find or don't find??

Wing'n it
We are seeing quite a few of the early radios with the headset amp IC bad. I did not realize how many until I asked the techs here and they said it was at least 40% of the failures they are seeing on the 1800 units. The connection I was talking about is where it plugs into the Audio Unit.

Is that something you can repair if its bad? Any idea on the cost of repair for this??
