How to decode your Honda Motorcycle VIN Number in 5 steps:
1. Locate the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) printed on the frame of your Honda motorcycle.This is often stamped onto the right side of the steering head, where the front fork is mounted on the frame.The VIN is also imprinted on a metal tag located on the left side of the frame above the motor.
2. Locate the first character. This letter or numeral represents the country of manufacture. In this case, a "J" for Japan should be present.
3. Locate the second character, "H." This represents the name of the manufacturer, Honda.
4. Locate the third character. This letter or digit represents the vehicle type. Most Honda motorcycles use a "2," which refers to a motorcycle, although "A" or "1" may also be used.

Locate the fourth through the eighth characters. These letters and digits are used by each individual manufacturer to identify the model or engine type of the motorcycle.

This only tells that you the obvious 2008 goldwing in my case. Not information given regarding the options or trim package abs etc.
With all these gold wing owners, you would think there would be someone that would know how to tell what model he or she had. Is there nothing in print that tells you that you have a HPN or a HPNMA or HPNAMA etc.
Is the model on any printed information you got when your bike was purchased. title bill of sale on the bike somewhere????????
I am looking to buy a bike and all just say they have this or that which (i have found out) is not accurate when you go for a test ride.

That is what I am trying to find out, I am look to buy. I do not own one.
Some on this post indicate that a 47 in the vin number indicates the bike has abs brakes. Well I looked at a 2008 today that had 47 in the vin number and it did not have ABS. So I wasted all day going to see a bike that I was told had abs and it did not.
Does any one own a gold wing that you have paperwork indication what trim package your have? If so where did you find your bike model number for example for the 2009 Gold wing there are 4 models....

When I ask sellers what model number they have, no one seems to know or where to find it. And I don't either. And I don't trust what they think they have anymore.
I think those numbers are from an order pad a dealer fills out when ordering different models. To us they have no meaning.

But these numbers mean everything if you are trying to make an offer on a bike that is 200 miles from your home. These letters tell you everything that is on the oem bike and if you go to Kelley bb or NADA BB you have to enter these model numbers to get the correct values.
So, I don't know where these numbers come from but they are listed on both blue books. I am going to dealer tomorrow and find out the story and the details of these unknown trim model identification numbers.

You can tell the version by looking at the bike.
Gen one 1800's were abs or non-abs.
ABS has logo on fender and notched ring on front for wheel speed sensor.
Gen 2 had the euro style taillight and 4 trim levels.
Base (heated grips and seat, better audio system, etc)
level 2 - Navi (adds gps)
level 3 - abs (adds abs brakes))
level 4 - airbag (guess what, adds airbag)
Gen 3 has the revised side bags/taillights and the same 4 levels.
It is not possible to pick and choose add-ons: meaning you cannot get an abs, unless you also buy the navi.
Some colours were available multiple years, some only once.

I started this reply this way because most were only telling him what the model numbers meant, not how to find them. VINs are a government requirement. I have been in government work long enough to know that if they require an identification # on something, it will d@#$ sure tell them everything about that something as it came off the factory floor. Look at states with annual inspections. They can tell if the VIN plate is original or not, belongs on the vehicle it is attached to, what engine it was built with, etc. It's in there, just have to know how to look.

You're not answering his question. He's not asking what the Model # means ........ He's asking how to locate / find / determine what the model # is ........................
I don't know if it is located on the motorcycle anywhere. But the model # for my GL1800 is on the original sales invoice, it's on my original warranty card, and it's also on my insurance card. I know this may not help you, especially if the seller does not have any of this ....................
The only place it MIGHT be located on the bike is on the color code label on the gas tank cover. The model name is supposed to be there, but I haven't really paid attention to it. The parts list that comes with the service manual has the cross over info. for the VIN to option level, but it doesn't say anything about the letters used in the model name.

I know this won't answer the OPs actual question since the model numbers he is wanting are not used (regularly) by most owners and it is not anywhere on the bike that I know of.
I would request general and specific photos of the bike;
1) General photos from the left/right/front and back (general condition/color and to help in determining year)
2) Good picture of the dash area to include the lower windshield down to the gas filler cover with the key on (Does the bike have Nav?? or Airbag??)
3) Close up of the right side of the front wheel (does the bike have ABS??)
with these pictures you will be able to determine what trim level is pictured. If you have any doubts, post the pictures here and I am sure someone here can/will tell you what trim level you are looking at.

It is very easy to spot the options on all of the Gold Wings. Check meter panel for ABS and Nav. Also on the front forks it will say ABS if it has ABS. Look at the grips. Are there wires running to the grips. If so, they are heated. Honda sells the heated grips and seat as a package. CB does not come standard, so if it is new it most likely does not have a CB. Again, if curious, push the CB button on the radio. If CB is present dialog will appear. If it has air bag, it will actually bee stated on bike as well as cost much more.
Again the levels begin with the base model (no nothin') and progress to the top level and has all factory options. It is really quite simple, once you understand what you want, such as ABS, for example. Since Honda puts the options in "packages" you may get something you do not want, but that is just the way it goes. You do not need VIN's and all that stuff. There are very simple ways once you have a rudimentary understanding of the options.

I'm reading of reports of somebody selling FAKE ABS bikes by putting the ABS tagged fender and even the cog sensor wheel on base bikes and selling them as ABS.
Haven't heard of anybody going so far as to fake the dash light... but if its lucrative enough, somebody will.
